What do you like about being older?

mgwnzy Fri 11-May-12 16:54:41

I have just joined Gransnet and am so looking forward to joining in the discussions. I have never joined anything like this before and I feel like a kid with a new toy.

My favourite things about being in my 60's are;

Elastic waist trousers
Flat shoes
Grey hair (no more dyeing)
and finally
Having the confidence to say no when I don't want to do something.
I would love to here other "positives" to old age

Welcome mgwnzy, it's a great place to join in, catch up. Meet other GNs and feel free to express your thoughts, within reason!!
I can agree with your favourites 60s things and will think of a few more to add soon. smile

mgwnzy - welcome! There are so many positives to being the age we are now (and that doesn't mean 'old age'!!) I'm more confident, too - I don't suffer fools gladly and I'm not so eager to please any more, either! Before I joined Gransnet I'd never been part of a forum either - and I enjoy this one so much! Looking forward to seeing your posts! smile

A few more to add to above
Handing the Grandchildren back
Retiring
Free bus pass and Senior Rail Card
Not bowing to pressure from others.....

Welcome mgwnzy. Mine are grandchildren, retirement, not being part of the rat race, few responsibilties, wandering round the park with my dog, reminiscing and having a laugh with friends, being able to say no when I choose, not having to wear a suit or attend meetings, getting concessions at the cinema and theatre, and Gransnet! smile

Hello ngwnzy

I like the freedom to do what I want any time of the day
grandchildren are a delight
meeting up with friends for a meal
Not having to get up at some ungodly hour to drive long distance like France
having time to read the paper properly and follow all the political ins and outs

what I don't like is that time is whizzing it is frightening!!

Butternut Fri 11-May-12 17:44:37

mgwnzy I was a newbie to forums too - and GN is a good place to be. In fact it's so good that I have no interests in other forums!

I've lost my waist (and I don't know where it's gone)
My hair is silver and I'm pleased
Gardening all day
Occasionally giving up cooking 'cause I've done it for so long
Embracing my fat arms
Walking, walking and walking
Most importantly - enjoying the seasons, the countryside and weather-watching!

I love my grandkids, but they are a long, long way away - so skype is very special!

Greatnan Fri 11-May-12 17:54:17

Almost everything everyone else has said, especially being free to do what I want, plus Living Alone and being able to choose where I travel without having to consult anyone else's tastes.

What a nice idea for your first post!

grannyactivist Fri 11-May-12 18:01:34

I like being the hub of my family
I like that my children are grown and settled
I have more confidence
I love spending great chunks of time with my grandson
I choose my own workload - it's great
I like the way my relationship with my husband has deepened

and I really, really enjoy being a part of this wonderful Gransnet community and am so glad to welcome you mgwnzy.
As greatnan has said; a lovely first post. sunshine

nanachrissy Fri 11-May-12 18:17:32

Hi mgwnzy welcome, this was my first forum too, and I love it.

Not having to get up to an alarm.
Having a pension.
Being able to meet friends whenever I like.

All the other things mentioned too!!

hummingbird Fri 11-May-12 18:19:35

Hello Mgwnzy, welcome! I agree with the other posts, growing older brings many benefits, the greatest of which is grandchildren! Mind you, I hate my greying hair, I'm not over keen on my wrinkles, and seeing my mum looking back at me from the mirror is very weird! It's lovely to be among a group of women going through the same thing, though, and I'm sure you'll soon feel at home. smile

kittylester Fri 11-May-12 18:23:07

Hi mgwnzy and welcome!

I love everything that everyone has said except I refuse to go grey or wear elasticated waists! Nor am I too keen on flat shoes but find I wear them anyway! confused I think it is mostly being happier in my own skin than I have been ever before.

Anagram Fri 11-May-12 18:25:13

Hear, hear, kittylester! There are a lot of good things about growing older, but I refuse to go grey gracefully or wear flat shoes (I don't find them comfortable anyway!). Half-elasticated waists are ok, as long as they're not on show....wink

glammanana Fri 11-May-12 18:35:49

mgwnzy welcome you will have a fab time here looking forward to reading your posts and to you joining in with our discussions and all the other good things that we get up to ? Yes there are lots of good things about getting older but I must have my hair coloured and looking good and at least some foundation on during the day,its just thing that I have got used to from my days at work, the only thing I really don't like is the fact that my cooking skills are not used as much now that there is only mr.glamma and myself most days, but I make up for it with treats for DGCs by way of baking.

Ariadne Fri 11-May-12 18:58:44

Hello, mgwnzy! What a good idea.

I am enjoying this "Third Journey" with the freedom to do what I want to do, when I want to,
And (I know I am lucky!) having enough money to realise some of my dreams and /treat my DC / DGC
And (fingers crossed) being quite healthy
AND not having to get up at 5.15 in the morning
Having such an amazing family

smile

jeni Fri 11-May-12 19:11:29

Wellcome! I enjoy being zany!

MrsJamJam Fri 11-May-12 19:21:36

When I saw your thread title I wanted to write 'grandchildren and retirement', but I see that those have already had plenty of mentions.

I do also agree with Butternut that watching the passing of the seasons is wonderful. In my working life they seemed to pass almost without noticing, but now I walk our local lane every day, and every day the plants/birds/trees/fields are different. I feel so much more in tune with the natural world.

Ariadne Fri 11-May-12 19:29:10

MrsJamJam yes, I hadn't thought of that, but you are so right!

nightowl Fri 11-May-12 19:33:00

Lovely to meet you mgwnzy and a good question! I enjoy being a granny much more than I ever expected, and I love the way my relationship with my daughter has deepened since she became a mother.

I love the fact that I no longer feel I want or need a relationship, I feel happy with my independence, with my friends, and with the small things in life.

And I love the fact that I no longer worry so much about what anyone thinks smile

If only all those people I have lost along the way could be here to share it with me (sorry I know this is meant to be a positive thread)

POGS Fri 11-May-12 19:57:21

Hi MGWNZY. I love being the best nanny in the world, sorry the rest of you.
I can get away with shameless flirting.
I smile when I see and hear my daughter growing into her mum(poor soul)
I get a free POO KIT from the N.H.S..

Anagram Fri 11-May-12 20:06:19

You mean you actually like the Poo Kit, POGS? confused grin

nightowl Fri 11-May-12 20:14:58

When do I get my Poo kit?? Gosh the things I have to look forward to, I had no idea!!!

merlotgran Fri 11-May-12 20:20:02

Hi mgwnzy. I agree with all the above but I have binned my poo kit. Is that naughty?
I also drag DH out of bed when I want to get to the shops early as he is partially sighted and so long as he's in the car I can use the blue badge for parking.

Grannylin Fri 11-May-12 20:22:42

Hi MGWNZY(what does it mean?)
Eating the same meal three days running because I like scrambled egg and chorizo
Taking the dog to the beach and paddling with him
Looking for escapes and actually escaping
Experimenting with nail varnish and fake tan
Having a secret cigarette in the greenhouse!

nightowl Fri 11-May-12 20:24:39

merlotgran can I have your poo kit if you don't want it?

you made me laugh at the thought of you dragging your OH out of bed so you can use his parking badge grin
