Silly, greedy American idea.

Who else is joining 'Buy nothing Friday' ?

Stansgran Thu 26-Nov-15 09:14:47

Good article by Deborah Ross in the Times today. Stay At Home was her advice.

I thought I'd have to change my weekly shop day to avoid it but fortunately Asda are opting out. There's no way I'd go within a million miles otherwise.
I may have tried to order something on line but there's nothing I need.

merlotgran Thu 26-Nov-15 09:28:49

I think I'll do my shopping today.

AlieOxon Thu 26-Nov-15 10:07:01

Seems to be starting today! Why have I just decided that I need a new landline phone??? I think I will wait.

rubysong Thu 26-Nov-15 10:15:35

It's just their equivalent of our January sales, getting rid of old stock before the end of their financial year. I don't know why it has caught on here, there's no logic to it. We have our sales in January for the same reason, (people have been known to sleep outside shops, behave badly etc.,) and in July to make room for winter stock. I shall ignore 'black Friday' and hope it goes away.

I think it's fine offering great deals on products, and if people want a bargain they should go for it. What makes me hate the whole black Friday craze is seeing manic people crawling over each other and screaming over a non-brand discounted telly.

Why the hell would people sink this low? They're behaving as if the nuclear apocalypse is imminent and it's first come first serve on the canned food. Get a grip people!

Charleygirl Thu 26-Nov-15 11:55:04

I think that it is fine if there is something that one wants and it has been heavily discounted. I bought an Amazon HD Fire last year and I never regretted it. I bought it on line- I could not be bothered being part of a rugby scrum- I am not that desperate for anything. I will look for an office chair on line but if I do not see one, fine.

I've just sent off for a couple of Christmas presents from the Habitat Black Thursday sale, 25 per cent off which means I can buy nicer presents than I would have done. Also a couple of things from Boden which have also started their sale early. That will probably be it.

I have started Christmas present shopping anyway and can't see the point of deliberately ignoring Friday.

Anniebach Thu 26-Nov-15 14:40:06

The number of e mails are a pest

WilmaKnickersfit Thu 26-Nov-15 14:50:59

Yes, they are.

M0nica Thu 26-Nov-15 17:03:32

I will not be doing anymore shopping of any kind until Monday, not even online.

suzied Thu 26-Nov-15 17:07:13

Black Friday is after thanksgiving - I didn't know we celebrated thanksgiving. That will be next.

Cath9 Thu 26-Nov-15 17:28:06

I went around the shops today, only because I had to pass through the city. If they reduce items so much one can see how much the shops must make.
All I got was a Christmas card reduced as it says:
'Happy Christmas, you guys'
Just right for my son who lives in NZ!

ninathenana Thu 26-Nov-15 17:30:36

I've finished my present shopping
<very smug emote>

rosequartz Thu 26-Nov-15 18:12:08

Oh, is it Black Friday?

rosequartz Thu 26-Nov-15 18:17:23

It's Thursday confused

bookdreamer Thu 26-Nov-15 18:57:54

Some people are thankful for the reductions just before Christmas. It's the same as sales on Boxing Day when people used to queue from Christmas Day for a bargain.

rosesarered Thu 26-Nov-15 21:14:38

If you do it online, that's fair enough for a bargain, I wouldn't rush round the shops though.

Anniebach Thu 26-Nov-15 21:43:17

It's been Black Friday for days

Ana Thu 26-Nov-15 21:53:05

It has been - I have to agree with you there ab! The 'bargains' have been on offer all week and will probably continue to be so over the weekend.

Anya Thu 26-Nov-15 23:02:22

I think DFS are having a sale grin

Leticia Thu 26-Nov-15 23:19:24

I refuse to take part, I shall not go to shops or buy online.

ninathenana Fri 27-Nov-15 00:42:31

Anya grin

annsixty Fri 27-Nov-15 09:18:52

Well Oak Furniture Land certainly is Anya they must belong to the same group as DFS.
