Hi I dont know what to get my grandson for his birthday. He is turning 12 next week he asked me to surprise him he didn't ask for a specific present.

Sorry. Not going there again.

Ana Wed 29-Jun-16 17:45:56

My thoughts too, breeze!

Our grandson turned 10 a few weeks back and we got him a pair of proper binoculars from the RSPB - entry level but good quality. About 50 quid. We took him to Rutland Water to see the osprey chicks and other birds, and he was delighted.

Ok, I'll play!

He seemed to be very specific about the ones is and if style boots, so why not ask him to give you a list of ,say, 10 things he would be happy to receive and you pick one of them.

He gets something he will like, but It's still a surprise.

Sorted.

I thought he was getting an animal onesie and ugg boots?

MiniMouse Wed 29-Jun-16 18:16:36

Perhaps he's very tall and needed the binoculars to see his new boots?

MiniMouse Wed 29-Jun-16 18:20:04

Oops blush in my excitement, I misread gj's post as Grantj's

Anyway, perhaps Grantj could buy binoculars for the purpose I mentioned . . . . .

Surprise him. Don't get him one.

Grantj10 Wed 29-Jun-16 21:13:59

He's small for his age

Grantj10 Wed 29-Jun-16 21:16:42

He's already got them I bought him them for when we go on holiday next month

Ana Wed 29-Jun-16 21:33:05

A year's supply of plimsolls...? grin

(Shoezone's for preference, of course)

Alton towers trip
When he comes back from camp.

Get him a Smart phone and make sure your Credit card tops it up smile

Complete works of Shakespeare? That would probably surprise him!

Grantj10 Wed 29-Jun-16 22:22:49

Alton towers is a good idea might pay for him and one of his friends to go.

Grantj10 Wed 29-Jun-16 22:24:43

He hates reading so highly unlikely he would want a Shakespeare book :-)

Bellanonna Wed 29-Jun-16 22:31:09

I'm starting to feel ambivalent confused; or am I having an unusual episode of naivety.....?

mcem Wed 29-Jun-16 22:44:06

Complete works of Shakespeare is a bit more than just a book. However if he hates reading maybe, as a conscientious gran, you should be trying to encourage him to hone his reading skills. It's quite useful to be a good coñfident reader. Does he have any career aspirations yet that might suggest an appropriate present?

Taking my DGS to Beaulieu super car for the weekend.

phoenix Wed 29-Jun-16 22:49:19

Reading is the gateway to knowledge.

Of course it is ok to wear a onesie and ugg style boots whilst reading.

Bellanonna Wed 29-Jun-16 22:59:17

Ok. I'll stop being ambivalent. Why not get a nice set of audio books since he hates reading and this might foster a love of literature? you could sit and listen with him. Have some fun time together.
What did you give him last year as a matter of interest?

breeze Wed 29-Jun-16 23:52:23

How about a hard back copy of '101 ways to dupe a Granny and giggle a lot afterwards' by U.R. Sust. Available in all good books shops from a while ago. Unless of course, he already has a copy. Would be a shame to get a duplicate gift.

There's a good DVD out called "Watching Paint Dry". Compared to this thread it might be a bit too exciting.
