Can someone tell me please? BBC News , untill 10am Saturday mornings, what accent has the blond girl on the sofa ?

Pittcity Sat 23-Jul-16 09:59:41

She was brought up in Middlesbrough.

Anniebach Sat 23-Jul-16 10:03:58

Thank you Pittcity, I think that's Yorkshire ?

Yes it was The North Riding before it became Cleveland in the 70s county boundaries shuffle.

Much to DH's disgust! He was born there!

Anniebach Sat 23-Jul-16 10:32:59

Aw I sympathise with your husband, the same thing happened to parts of Wales in the seventies . My younger daughter is quite miffed that she was born in Breconshire but now her county of birth is Gwent , my elder daughter was born in Montgomeryshire but now her county of birth is Powys. We liked our counties as they were , now there are more boundaries changes to come . Thanks for explaining

There are two Blonde women on BBC news

Louise Minchin - born in Hong Kong, educated in Surrey

Steph McGovern was born in N. Tyneside and grew up in Middlesbrough

Anniebach Sat 23-Jul-16 10:58:15

Not Louise Minchin Grand Tea, so must be Steph, she says oop for up?

GandTea Sat 23-Jul-16 11:05:16

I love Steph's dialect

Elrel Sat 23-Jul-16 11:33:01

Annie - researching family tree I've found the tiny area one branch still lives in has been skipping in and out of Shropshire and Wales (Flintshire) over the last 200 years more times than I can keep in mind.

Elrel Sat 23-Jul-16 11:35:13

My mother was proud to have been born in Somerset, so glad she never knew her death certificate said she was born in 'Avon'.

Elrel Sat 23-Jul-16 11:36:29

To return to the thread - love the deep voice of the Caribbean R4 continuity announcer!

Elrel Sat 23-Jul-16 11:37:48

Neil Nunes, now I've checked I shan't forget,,plus I know what he looks like!

gettingonabit Sat 23-Jul-16 11:39:59

I like Steph but, blimey, what a strong accent she has! Nice, though.

Greyduster Sat 23-Jul-16 12:26:59

If Steph McGovern was born and brought up on this side of the Pennines, she seems to have a Lancashire accent to my (Yorkshire) ear. I find it far too strong, though, and think she needs to soften it a bit. I have a soft spot for Louise Minchin - as soon as I see her I want to smile!

Anniebach Sat 23-Jul-16 12:48:19

Elrel, I am sure you have , they should leave Flintshire , all of Flintshire in Wales, it's ours.

Neil Nunes, so now he has a name, he could read yellow pages and I would listen , phew what a voice

gettingonabit Sat 23-Jul-16 13:06:16

I wouldn't have put her down as Middlesbrough.

WilmaKnickersfit Sat 23-Jul-16 14:07:19

I didn't know Neil's name either, but what a voice! I sometimes think he should break in to song. Apparently he came top of a poll for The Oldie for the most irritating voice on radio! shock

Louise is lovely. smile

KatyK Sat 23-Jul-16 15:11:05

I agree re Louise, she's sweet. It's Carol Kirkwood's accent that gets on my nerves, I'm not sure why. I speak as a Brummie, whose accent gets on many peoples nerves grin

phoenix Sat 23-Jul-16 15:23:25

Neil Mines has slightly changed his pronunciation of some words, he used to "the Archers" , now says "thee Archers"

Hope this makes sense, rather difficult to explain in writing!

phoenix Sat 23-Jul-16 15:41:13

Nunes, damn Hudl!

Judthepud2 Sun 24-Jul-16 09:42:56

Oh yes! Neil Nunes and his wonderful voice! Have you heard him reading the late night shipping forecast? Rich and deep. Sends me to sleep happy.

TriciaF Sun 24-Jul-16 10:11:34

I think Steph's accent sounds further north than Middlesborough.
It's a bit of a mixture. Trying to remember the Co. Durham accent - that could be it.

jeberdes83 Sun 24-Jul-16 10:26:12

I don't think Steph should be a nèws anchor, her accent is too broad.

GandTea Sun 24-Jul-16 10:27:28

Sounds very Teeside to me rather than Tyneside. She was born on Tyneside so perhaps here parents had a Tyneside dilect.

Elrel Sun 24-Jul-16 10:46:14

Jud - yes, Mr Nunes and the Shipping Forecast, soooothing combination!
Annie?? My country cousins haven't moved in 200 years. It's the border that kept changing their county and country as I've discovered from records and censuses.
