I read in the paper today that the health people are now trying to 'get through' to the population that you do not need a gym membership or run marathons to get exercise and keep healthy. Ye gods.
Growing up in the fifties we got all the exercise we needed by walking everywhere (no family car for us) and being 'out playing' after school and during the holidays. It comes as no surprise to me then that walking, ironing, gardening, cleaning or anything that get us moving has got to be good for us and is exercise. I just wonder how much that survey cost? Enough to buy a few gym memberships I am sure.
I encourage my grandkids to exercise by taking them out to the park, the woods, climbing trees, planting seeds and basically just moving. They do not even notice that I am doing it. It is 'normal' to do this when visiting me.
Perhaps the government should be seeing that what happened as normal for certain earlier generations has certainly set down good habits for a healthy mind and body in later age.
With the so called ticking timebomb of 'too many elderly people to look after' we should all be encouraged to pass on good examples to the grandkids regarding moving as much as possible and cooking so they do not end up obese and living on takeaways.
