All the James Bond films. Well I haven't seen that many. Obviously.
Yes 2001 definitely!
I went to see it in the 70's with my boyfriend, now OH, and fell asleep in the cinema. He was disgusted that I didn't appreciate it. That should have told me something!
Worst recent film - Black Swan. Pretentious drivel.

Oh I can't pinpoint just one! All the above apart from one or two JB films which I enjoyed when they were out in the '60s. Everyone raved about "Warhorse" - can't understand why, every cliche imaginable. "Black Swan" - absolutely awful. What on earth was "Mama Mia" supposed to be for? Presumably killing some good Abba songs! I could ramble on, but it's nearly lunchtime . . .

East pray love was dire wanst it - couldnt cope with Mama Mia or War Horse I dont do scmultz!
I actually walked out of a Mike Leigh film in the 90s in London. So memorable I can't even remember the title !or the actors.
Lost In Translation......I fell asleep.
'They Shoot Horses Don't They' - as I remember it involved couples marathon dancing, but as I fell asleep in the first 20 minutes and my then fiancee woke me up to plead 'can we go before I kill myself?' I'm not really sure what else it was about

Uncle Boonmee who can recall his past lives; 5 star rating in the Independant. Really looked forward to Black Swan; what a disappointment

The Mothman Prophecies. Supposedly horror film. Never a spine tingle - just silly!

I agree with Nightowl - Black Swan was a load of rubbish. The only film I can remember walking out of was The Royal Tenenbaums but there are a few others I hated but sat through.

Mon 11-Jun-12 22:23:15
I haven't seen The Royal Tenenbaums, but I did see the director's latest film, Moonrise Kingdom last week so I kinda get what you mean. All style and no substance.
I saw The Royal Tenenbaums on TV. It was laughable...

Is that laughable in a good way
. I mean, was it so bad it was good.....? [methinks not]
I had only known DH for about a month when he took me to see 'Clockwork Orange'
Think I must have blotted out the plot, as all I can remeber is I hated it

A fairly recent one my son lent us called 'Cloverfield'. Utterly pointless.
And the Nicole Kidman version of Moulin Rouge. Could not finish it. Mind you. I liked the old one with ZsaZsa Gabor.
Joan I love Moulin Rouge with Nicole K, I watch it often and it always makes me cry!

If matched against budget "Australia" was pretty poor value for money!
What genre was it supposed to be? When it suddenly turned into a war movie I was muttering "Any minute now Huge Ackman is going to grow spikes all over and turn into an X man"
Jess Yes I thought "Australia" was dreadful (even with Hugh J!)

I thought the first half of Australia was great, and it should have ended there. Glad I didn't see it at the cinema. Don't really like Nicole Kidman as an actress, although she was good in The Hours.

Wall-E - took the older granchildren - didn't understand any of it!!
Probably the worst would be Myra Breckinridge - Rex Reed - a critic fer goo'ness sake! - was the leading man, who somehow turned into Raquel Welch - I think. It was a real train-wreck, mis-directed by Mike Sarne.
Oddly enough I quite enjoyed it in a sadistic sort of way...

Sound of Music - should come with gov health warning.
'Can cause severe nausea'.
Have only seen Sound Of Music as a sing along show when I was dressed as a brown paper parcel tied up with string!
I laughed all the way through it!
Brilliant idea nanaej. I've always wanted to go to that.
I'd love to see a brown paper parcel laughing. I think I might have seen Sound of Music once on TV but that was quite enough thank you.
It was a staff end of term outing: several nuns, a Maria, some hills (!), kittens etc! But I met a colleague from another school that night..also dressed as a brown paper parcel.. but she had arrived at Richmond Theatre dressed like that the week before the show was on!

I was once invited to a Dandy and Beano party, but it was on the same day as our village carnival and I couldn't be bothered to make two costumes, so I went to the party dressed as Mr Grumpy in a large blue cardboard box. I'll never forget ringing the doorbell, only to be greeted with 'sorry, wrong party' and the door closing, before they opened it again and let me in. It was the best party I've ever been to; being quite a shy and reserved person usually, the anonymity of being in a box released my flamboyant side, and I danced my way through the night. Not sure how I managed though, as I seem to remember forgetting to put eye holes in it

Hi Irene114 and welcome if you're new to Gransnet. Postings just appear in chronological order. Sometimes, when a topic is very controversial or fascinating, it's quite hard to keep track as the postings come thick and fast (not that Gransnetters are ever thick and, apart from Nelliedeane when faced with a man in uniform, they're not fast either).
Speak for yourself, absent!
Welcome, Irene

No I've never seen Titanic either, or Mamammamamammia
Kidman can be wonderful as in The Hours but in Australia was unconvincing as 40s upper class english person I thought.
Watched a strange film the other night on TV Called A Good Year. It was based on a Peter Mayle story and set, where else, in Provence.
Crowe (another australian actor) totally miscast as a City Trader with a hidden soul. Many UK actors would have done a much better job! James McEvoy for instance. The little boy was great. And the scenery.
Crowe totally unconvincing as a brit . Truly dire. I thought the same thing when he tried to play a brit navy sea captain in Nelson's time in Master and Commander. (In which the ship and the little boy were good) . Crowe so laid back i expected him to change into his jeans at any moment.
Is it problem with australians?
I always thought Bryan Brown was wonderful in anything he did...
JessM.....not too miffed about Aussies trying to do Brits or Europeans - hey Hugh Jackman can do no wrong for me! But I still can't forgive them for sticking Renee Zellweiger in as Bridget Jones!
Oh, come on now, Hilda - I felt the same about Renee Zellweiger when she was cast, but she certainly pulled it off!
Shakespeare In Love; Black Swan;Mamma Mia, Bridget Jones' Diarrhoea Diary - all utterly ridiculous in my opinion. Eat Pray Love - yes saw that on a flight down to Cape Town - all I prayed for was for the remote to work and switch the darned thing off!
On the subject of Mamma Mia, I went with some girlfriends to see the stage show and we had a ball. In that context, the silly plot made us laugh and we sang along with all the songs, then went off for a noisy dinner. Had a great time. But the film - please! Watched it for 20 mins then switched off. Sad to see Meryl Streep sink that low.

Black Swan is a good "don't put my DGD on the stage movie to share with your SILs!" Mine cancelled the ballet lessons not long afterwards
Nooooo sorry Anagram, I just dont like her....and when you think of all the wonderful young British actresses we could have had......I suspect that U.S. money had something to do with it as with Gwyenth in Shakespear in Love.....tho she, I felt did quite a good job!. Same here Mamma Mia the worst ever i watched to till date.
Last year in Marienbad when I was 17 and had an arty boyfriend. I hadn't a clue what it was about and had nothing to say.
The King's Speech would be in my list of worst films.
The Chipmunks, the latest one about being shipwrecked, watched several times with GS who loved it.
The Mothman Prophecies - supposedly a chiller. More likely to send you to sleep.
Add Black Swan, Il Deserto Rosso and Marienbad (with you there, mice) and Stromboli. Exposed to too much pretentious rubbish high culture too young
Ken Russells. "The Devils" from 1971. A revolting film.
I just loved Mama Mia I didn't think I would at all when it started, but I got carried away with the enthusiasm. It was just such a gloriously silly, funny and happy film with no pretensions to be anything more.

Never having seen Mamma Mia I caught it on the telly a few weeks back; watched a few minutes but couldn't believe what rubbish I was watching. I loved The Devils; it was the time in our lives where we watched Ken Russell and Fellini films. However, if I saw The Devils now I'd probably think it was pretentious drivel. Hated Black Swan, having looked forward to it for ages. On the subject of pretentious drivel I agree about The Tree of Life. And I didn't like Shutter Island. Must admit to having a soft spot for Russell Crowe and find him very watchable [which I don't understand with him having such a characterless podgy face].
Noooooooo, I love Mamma Mia, it's a real feel good film.....

Nellie Moser I hated The Devils too. In fact, my sister and I walked out part way through it.
As for Fellini films, another film in my bottom five is Amarcord.
And my most recent horrible film experience was called Into the Wild.
Another Yes for Mamma Mia. Hadn't seen the stage show but thought the movie was a joyful hoot!
Back to worsts though. Has anyone seen a fairly obscure movie "Ratboy"? Dreadful.
I've never laughed at Steve Martin. Roxanne in particular - awful.
Avatar. Boring and dreadful.
And I'm another one who can't get to the end of Titanic. In fact I've not got beyond the first 15 minutes.
Oh and Dances with Wolves. I think that's the last movie I actually walked out of.

It seems everyone here hates Mamma Mia, I don't, but can see it's cringemaking, as was Love Actually really hated the Hugh Grant/Martine McClucheon love story bit, yeah right can really see those two getting it on! Also hated Apocolypse Now, that would be my number one hate, but it was directed by Francis Ford Coppola who was also responsible for my all time favourites The Godfather 1 and 2 Didn't rate latest Anna Karenina much. Thought 40 Year old Virgin was crass and horrible and I think Anagram said she didn't like Royal Tenanbaums I agree, can't understand why it was so highly rated. My husband didn't like Moulin Rouge, I quite like it, I don't like the Bourne Films much which he does, but am OK with James Bond. Also by the time I'd got to the third film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I'd had it with hobbits and I'm definitely not going to see "The Hobbit".
Mama Mia is fun and doesn't claim to be anything else. That's why I like it so much - that and Colin Firth of course.
Rosemary's Baby. The Way We Were - we saw it on the 2nd night of our honeymoon, expecting it to be as good a What's Up, Doc?, which we both love (still) but it was so depressing.

Actually Ana, can't say I remembered, I was just scanning through the thread to see what others had nominated as their particular hates to see if I agreed with anyone.
One of my all time lows was Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (or was it the other way round?) I sat through it all because I was with a friend, but I'd lost the will to live after the first fifteen minutes.
I'm sorry to disagree with so many people but I loved Mama Mia. I wasn't expecting much and when we found the cinema was crammed with a mix of middle aged ladies and school girls I was a bit dubious. But it was great! Everyone was singing along, the schoolgirls were all getting up and dancing and we all left the cinema grinning like idiots
Oh Deedaa mine too, luckily I could walk out of it. Love Mamma Mia, but loathed the last Sex and the City

Alexander the Great, with a shockingly wooden and completely miscast Colin Farrell, and his army of Macedonians with thick Irish accents! They should have been ashamed to let it out of the cutting room.
Bridget Jones, The Edge of Reason. The theme had gone dry second time round.
