Just over a week to go until the Great British Bake Off returns (not that we're counting or anything) and to celebrate this jewel in the crown of the TV schedules, a little competition.

We're giving away two gorgeous books - Recipe For Life (Mary Berry's autobiography - £20) and Mary Berry's Cookery Course (£25) - to one lucky gransnetter.

How to enter? Simple. We're after limericks on cake, baking or Bake Off. The choice is yours.

Competition closes Monday 10 August at midday. (Usual T&Cs apply) So get creating!

Oh, what to win books by Mary Berry,
It's sure to make my week so merry,
Just waiting to hear word,
That I've come first, not second or third,
Sure to make me happy, so very.

But first a limerick on cake,
Or bread, scones, other things we bake,
So get comfortable, take a seat,
Put the oven on, turn up the heat,
But not too much, for Mary's sake!

So clear your throat, let out a cough,
It's finally time to Bake Off!
Turn down the heat, switch off the oven,
Carefully count your Baker's dozen,
Perfect cakes made to scoff!

(Atrocious limerick, sorry to say,
Most painful post of the day?
Hear collective groans,
Cringing and moans,
But still, the first to lead the way!)

wink

There was a nice lady called Mary
Who thought she'd bake cakes called fairy
To herself she did mutter
I now need some butter
So she trotted off down to the dairy

Are we allowed more than one entry?

I wish i really didn't like cake,
As you can see a fat me it does make,
But the smell in the kitchen when i bake,
Makes me really love eating cake,
But i really wish i didn't for my belly's sake!

There once was a Gran from Wyke
Whose buns her Grandson did not like,
So she took our her gin,
Gave an almighty grin
And now her fresh buns have a spike

TV Mary, a brilliant baker,
Inspired the whole nation to make her
Yummiest pastries and pies!
But sadly we all, girls and guys,
Have grown now so fat we could shake her!

There's a comp to be had for the taking,
If you make up a rhyme about baking.
Sponge cakes or scones,
big or little ones,
all are a joy to be making.
So my cap i do doth, to the British Bake Off,
for making my tastebuds awaken !

There is a bread baker called Paul,
At whose feet the ladies all fall.
A flash of blue eyes
If a cake doesn't rise
And into the corner they crawl!

The folk at the beeb said 'Let's bake.
Everything from fruit flans to cake.
We'll get Mary and Paul
A tent, not a hall
And see what contestants can make

granfromafar Mon 27-Jul-15 20:02:08

The Great British Bake Off is back
Of sweat and tears there'll be no lack
Mel and Sue's witty jokes
Will amuse all the folks
Perfect icing - you just need the knack!

shysal Mon 27-Jul-15 20:35:56

CariGransnet, will there be judging or just a draw for the winner?

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 27-Jul-15 21:23:40

There will be judging - we are, as I type, pulling together a panel of eminent Mumsnet and Gransnet officials who, by the looks of it, are going to have a very tough job indeed [if only we had an impressed emoticon]

A contestant on GBBO
Put all of her goodies on show.
Her buns and her baps
Were released from their wraps
Until Mary and Paul shouted 'Whoa!!!'

Treebee Mon 27-Jul-15 22:16:52

After a long day on my feet,
My question is ,"What can I eat?"
The answer is cake
So I start to bake,
A sweet treat that cannot be beat.

We all love to watch the great bake off
How the ratings must soar, it did take off
We all love Mary
Cakes light as a fairy
How I pine when the series does break off

Make a nice cake today.
Try the Mary Berry way.
Add all the stuff that she says you will need,
Mix it all up with a light hand indeed,
But don't eat it all today.

sue01 Tue 28-Jul-15 09:11:06

Mary Berry's a marvel - oh my !
Whether custards or flans, sponge or pie,
'Cos the way that she makes
Everything that she bakes
Means that duffers like me have a try!

witsyl Tue 28-Jul-15 09:25:33

The last line should read as follows

Make a nice cake today.
Try the Mary Berry way.
Add all the stuff that she says you will need,
Mix it all up with a light hand indeed
It will help you to work rest and play.

The Vicar has asked me to say,
Mary's book wouldn't half make his day.
Our Church Fete needs a prize,
And with cakes, breads and pies,
We could sell Raffle tickets all day !

yd1556 Tue 28-Jul-15 10:10:18

To bake on the beeb is a thrill
Afforded to entrants who will
Produce cakes,breads and fancies
From their store-cupboard pantries,
To delight and enthral us - just brill!

With sometimes a problem or two
And questions like "what shall I do?",
With dextrous dough-handling
The results are outstanding,
And always delivered "on cue"

Another new series, that's great!
Each contestant awaiting their fate;
From the call of "Let's Bake"
To the show's final take,
It's Great British Bake Off - can't wait!

MrsJ2000 Tue 28-Jul-15 11:06:35

in the kitchen we see Mary Berry
with recipes handpicked like a cherry
with icing you'll see
we'll all dance with glee
with a cake to make us all merry

Pamaga Tue 28-Jul-15 11:15:58

The Bake Off is back, hip hooray
This news has quite brightened my day
For Mary's my hero
I'll reach for my Be-ro
And try some cake making her way.

hollystone Tue 28-Jul-15 11:19:04

First married my cooking was a mess
Now a Nana it's better I confess
Mary Berry would help me on my way
On my cooking skills day by day
So as a Geordie I say to Gransnet
Would I like?.... Wye Aye Pet !!
