DS has moved into house with neglected garden. Lawn is so matted that mower and strimmer can't tackle it. Advice please!

Spike it all over with a garden fork to let some air in then give it a summer feed. Water well.

A brush cutter is a heavy duty strimmer with (I think) a metal blade it should cut the grass back. When you get it mowable don't cut it too low and with spiking, watering and feeding, as others have advised, you should soon get it back to a proper lawn. It is hard work!

In the Autumn hire a scarifier and scarify it. It will get all the matted vegetation out. The grass will look a bit bare by the time it is finished and there will be lots of scarified material to take to the tip or compost, but then treat as recommended above and it will come out a treat.

You can rent bins for garden waste from your council for a modest fee. In our case £40 a year.
Is the above advertising ???
