Just heard this report discussed on the radio.. having got back from the gym session working out a new programme. Then the doctor said playing with grandchilden counts as physical activity! Could have saved myself the cost of Gym membership!!

MaggieP a very belated response to your Zumba question - I do Zumba Gold which is the gentler version. Zumba for younger persons is very energetic!!

I'll join you there, nag. Absolutely no knowledge of wii, not even TV advertisements. No desire for any knowledge, either. I get plenty of exercise of all sorts just living.

Mamie Sat 28-Jul-12 06:26:08

My GDs taught me how to use the wii, then I bought one because we are so far from gyms etc here. I use it pretty much every day in winter and it helps keep my basic fitness going. I can live with the patronising voice - just!

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 20:48:44

Damn the lack of edit facility! 'unfamiliar with it' of course!

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 20:47:10

I should probably point out, for the avoidance of future misunderstandings, that I have no knowledge of Wii whatsoever other than what I've seen on the TV adverts. I can't be the only GN member who is unfamiliar it, surely? confused

Oh heck I'd forgotten about balance; started doing a few balancing things a while ago then forgot to do them....important as we get older to exercise out balance bits.

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 18:19:29

Thanks, Mamie. I'll definitely be avoiding balance progs like the plague! grin

Greatnan Fri 27-Jul-12 18:07:22

I might not bother then - I used to have an Apple pc and the American woman used to drive me mad when something went wrong, saying 'It's not my fault' in a horrible accent. Same goes for a satnav! I get enough stick from people, without inviting a machine to have a go at me.

Mamie Fri 27-Jul-12 18:00:55

On the Wii, Anagram. You stand on one leg on a board in front of the television and the program says in a patronising voice, "You're swaying a little today, Mamie. Practising every day will improve your balance." etc.

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 17:13:37

In fact, having looked back over this thread, I still have no idea what they are!

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 17:11:22

Oh! You must have known what I meant, then.
I had no idea there were balance progs.

Greatnan Fri 27-Jul-12 17:08:44

I see - it was just a small typo of 'prigs' for 'progs'.

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 16:58:22

I was asking the same of Jess!

Greatnan Fri 27-Jul-12 16:54:15

What on earth do you mean, Anagram?

Anagram Fri 27-Jul-12 15:43:17

Balance prigs? confused

Ella46 Fri 27-Jul-12 15:39:40

Just read this thread again and I would like to say that I am not unbalanced, just having trouble balancing! grin

JessM Fri 27-Jul-12 15:31:30

The step prog in wii is quite good for getting you started on exercising. Better than jogging on the spot. I agree about the balance prigs.

Greatnan Fri 27-Jul-12 10:40:44

The Wii just looks like good fun -I think I will get one.

Mamie Fri 27-Jul-12 10:07:29

I do think the wii is excellent for balance training. I find the yoga and muscle activities are great as a daily routine in winter. In case anyone thinks I have got shares in wii, there are things that I don't think it does particularly well!

Greatnan Fri 27-Jul-12 09:14:55

When you are walking along a stony path, about a foot wide, with a 100' unfenced drop at the side, you do tend to concentrate on your balance (and always lean in towards the hill on the other side!)

JO4 Fri 27-Jul-12 09:13:20

I get a bit nervous on narrow pavements. When the cars are whizzing by rather close!

JO4 Fri 27-Jul-12 09:11:47

Ella46 I wobble about all over the pavement! I worry that people will think I drink. (I don't! (well, not that much!))

Ella46 Fri 27-Jul-12 08:52:09

I must admit that I often feel a bit unbalanced.
Sometimes when I'm walking along I find I'm not going in a straight line! (I don't drink).
I do exercise though and walk as much as I can hmm

Butternut Fri 27-Jul-12 07:47:34

Maalie - I echo greatnan for taking up a new career.
Thought your post simple and clear.

Yes, good going greatnan - I hadn't really realised how balance goes off a bit when older - now I do!

A good balancing exercise is to brush one's teeth whilst standing on one leg - well - it works for me. smile

Greatnan Fri 27-Jul-12 07:42:29

The trouble is, when, that my daughter is convinced that this is exactly the way I will go, if she can't keep an eye on me!
