Hi, over the course of the last few weeks I felt increasingly ill, ending in a trip to a&e. I was suffering a DKA and after many tests and 4 days in hospital I was diagnosed as a late onset type 1 diabetic.
Do any of you wise ladies have experience of this and how it has affected you? Some advice, tips and favourite foods/recipes would be very much appreciated smile

This is very rare and means you will require insulin injections. I suggest you talk to your health professionals first and then look to adopting a Mediterranean diet.

Thanks Anya, I'm attending regular clinics with my DSN and a dietician. I'm getting to grips with regular testing and the insulin injections.
I don't know anyone else who has this and wondered if any posters here have experience of this.

Both my DH and grandson have type 1 diabetes. Grandson diagnosed when he was only 9. Just take all the advice from your diabetes nurse, doctor etc, make sure you check your blood regularly and take the correct amount of insulin. If you have the chance to go on a DAFNE course, it is very helpful, it's all about understanding the importance of knowing how much carb you are eating and how to adjust your insulin accordingly. I'm sure your diabetes nurse would tell you about it. Good luck, you will be fine.

Thank you NannyDee my nurse mentioned a course they are arranging for me, so I imagine it will be that one.

Try clicking on this blue link Agatha Mediterranean Diet and Diabetes

In type 2 diabetes you're need to severely restrict your carbs, though this message hasn't got through even to some health professionals. With type 1 though, and especially because you're injecting, you need above all to be eating in a very healthy way.

This might seem a quite wordy and academic link but it's probably very good advice.

Specialist nurses usually have a lot of knowledge. Probably more than most GPs. It must be a bit of a shock for you though.

You will no doubt need advice when no one is around at some stage. If you download the app DCUK Forum this site has so much information for T1, T2,T3, gestational diabetes and Lada diabetes. You can ask any question and not be judged as silly or uninformed. I prowl the pre diabetes forums, have posted queries and have learned so very much. There are diabetics on there who know more about insulin management than most health professionals. Good luck and think positive.

Yes, it was a shock, but I'm coming to terms with it.

Izabella I download that, thanks.
