That was what Saturday nights were all about - gentle entertainment by people who could entertain without screaming into the microphone (you could actually see their mouths!) and we could understand the words. A bit of gentle humour thrown in, and the world was o.k. for a few hours.
I had a thing for Val Doonigan...and his sweaters were very nice too. And, I remember having a crush on the shorter of the Black and White Minstrel trio. He was a tenor and his name was John [Boulter?] I think!
His show would always make me laugh or cheer me up but my husband says he can't remember the Cookie Bear. I have asked a lot of people in the past if they remember but they look at me blankly - I'm not that ancient (64) and I'm surprised a lot of people can't even remember his show. RIP Andy
