...has died aged 52. Very sad and shocking news.

Gally Tue 11-Mar-14 10:30:54

I didn't like the man too much, but that is sad. He did rather appear to be a heart-attack waiting to happen, but perhaps he had some other life threatening problem which is why he took his recently much criticised holiday in S. America?

GillT57 Tue 11-Mar-14 10:39:53

He was confrontational, but stuck to his principles unlike many members of the political spectrum, so I had a sneaking admiration for him. He also had quite a sense of humour, heard him on a few Radio 4 political discussion shows, and on I am Sorry I Haven't a Clue, and he struck me as quite a genuine man.

Eloethan Tue 11-Mar-14 10:39:54

Very sad news, for his family and for his union. He was a very effective union leader who did his very best for the members.

Spidergran5 Tue 11-Mar-14 10:43:40

A real working class hero. I find this news quite shocking, he was so young.

kittylester Tue 11-Mar-14 10:46:25

How sad for his family. I agree with Gally's comments.

annodomini Tue 11-Mar-14 10:47:44

He will be a very hard act to follow.

Galen Tue 11-Mar-14 10:50:39

I was listening to him on radio 4 yesterday. I remember him saying he was the only one in his street not on benefit. (Only 9 houses though)

Galen Tue 11-Mar-14 10:52:26

It does seem very sudden though! He was overweight. Perhaps a heart attack or CVA ?.
Sympathy to his family.

whenim64 Tue 11-Mar-14 10:55:19

Oh, how shocking - such a young age. I'm very sorry to hear that.

gettingonabit Tue 11-Mar-14 10:58:58

A man of principle, who fought tirelessly for his members. I admire him for not giving an inch, ever.

A sad day for the trade union movement.

penguinpaperback Tue 11-Mar-14 11:04:01

A sad time for all his family and yes it's been mentioned he was on Radio 4 just yesterday so it must be such a shock for them.

trisher Tue 11-Mar-14 11:08:24

How sad and what a loss to the union movement.

mollie Tue 11-Mar-14 11:38:40

Always sad when someone so full of life dies suddenly. I didn't agree with him much but I'm sorry to hear the news.

Charleygirl Tue 11-Mar-14 11:43:26

I did not agree with him at all and felt that he should not be living in a London council house/flat and earning the salary he was on but it is sad to hear the suddenness of it.

chloe1984 Tue 11-Mar-14 12:03:10

How very sad , so sorry to hear this news.

granscotland Tue 11-Mar-14 12:04:37

Wish politicians and trade unionists would take a leaf out of Bob Crow's book and tell it like it is. A man full of principles he will be sorely missed by the RMT members.

Deedaa Tue 11-Mar-14 14:27:16

I was surprised how young he was, I always thought he was much older. I didn't always agree with him, but he was someone who had worked for a living at a proper job - unlike most politicians.

sunseeker Tue 11-Mar-14 16:39:39

I didn't agree with his views or his politics but as has been said before it is always sad when someone so relatively young dies suddenly, a terrible shock for his family.

durhamjen Tue 11-Mar-14 17:40:54

I agreed with him and his politics. It's stunning that he died so young and suddenly. I agree with you, granscotland.
Hopefully his family will be able to carry on living in the house they call home.

TriciaF Tue 11-Mar-14 19:41:31

I also agree with what he stood for.
Far too soon to die, he was one of the last of the genuine socialists.

rosequartz Tue 11-Mar-14 20:08:12

I did not agree with a lot of what he said but would defend his right to say it and believe he stood up for his members and their rights.
It is very shocking news that he went so suddenly at such a relatively young age.

durhamjen Tue 11-Mar-14 22:42:10

Last month Tony Benn was taken to hospital, very ill, but I have not seen anything about him since. You reminded me Tricia, as he is another true socialist.

Gally Tue 11-Mar-14 22:52:39

I read last week that he had been allowed to leave hospital and was 'being cared for at home' .

durhamjen Tue 11-Mar-14 23:13:18

Thanks, Gally, for that information.
