The government is after suggestions for what to print on £1 coins. Any suggestions?

Well, there's a bit of problem isn't there, as it's supposed to be a coin for the UK. It had better be put on hold for the time being.

Strange timing, I thought. Or maybe that's the point.

Maybe it is. Perhaps the text should be:

Well, you've had your pound of flesh

£1 coins have a number of different things on them anyway.
Strange timing? No, I expect it's been planned for a while and the "Scottish Question" never came into it.
(What Scottish Question? Surely that'll all blow over without much fuss, won't it?)

"Not legal tender in Scotland"?

Announced in the budget 2014. Scottish question was known about then. Not that I'm a conspiracy theorist. The design competition was only announced on 12th September.

Of course it was known about then, to anyone who was interested.

The competition was announced on the 12th September but must have been planned for some time before that.

So why do you think the Scottish question never came into it? The Lords were discussing devolution before 2013.

FarNorth Mon 15-Sep-14 13:43:27

I think that whoever set up the design competition was uninterested in the referendum, as were David Cameron and his chums until the last few days when they suddenly thought "Oops, this could actually happen. We better nip up to Scotland and tell them how heart-broken we will be if they vote Yes."

More like discussing their next round of freebies, Dj*!

Claymore thru' the heart of democracy, perhaps, on a field of thorns?

It looks as though it could be fun.
I found myself inspecting two-pound coins to see what was on them. I like the Dickens one.

I like the twelve sided shape.

An ironic clump of thrift. As it looks like a threepenny bit and probably buys as much. And ironic because there is no point in saving any more.
