One week on ...

So much seems to have happened in just one week since Jeremy Corbyn was elected to the labour leadership; some good, some bad and some just plain ridiculous.

Being even handed I thought this thread should have a Conservative point of view to start the discussion of what comes next.

Just to give a flavour Andrew Gimson on the Conservative Home website, although he obviously does not agree with the Corbyn view of politics he starts by saying "How pinched and petty-minded is the attitude that underlies so much of the comment ..."

Remembering this is a man whose views are diametrically opposed to JC's - it is well worth a read while we look forward (or dread smile ) the up coming conference to see why he believes "this approach is blinkered" when talking about the commentary on the man who having stood for the leadership of his party and "won it by inspiring a quarter of a million people to vote for him, and came to the Dispatch Box to convey something of their views."

Anya Sun 20-Sep-15 20:30:27

Not another thread about JC (sigh)

merlotgran Sun 20-Sep-15 20:33:48

I stopped reading the OP when I got to the bit about a Conservative point of view.

Even handed???? Discussion?????

Pull the other one hmm

Indinana Sun 20-Sep-15 20:38:25

Hahaha, even-handed, hahahaha [rollingonthefloorclutchingmysidesemoticon]

Surely you cannot believe an article on Conservative Home, written by a conservative does not have something in it worth reading. I notice you have taken the grown up (?) point of view and commented without reading it.

Anya with the conferences coming up I thought this was a good subject to highlight. You could start a thread about another party conference or leader, indeed it would be good it you did. Why don't you?

Gracesgran Sun 20-Sep-15 20:51:13

Another thread has ended by the way so we are not over-run with them.

rosequartz Sun 20-Sep-15 20:52:25

I started one as well blush

I think I will moon

rosesarered Sun 20-Sep-15 20:55:09

I am all Corbyn-ed out, after saturation coverage this last week.grin

merlotgran Sun 20-Sep-15 20:57:31

Yep! I have commented without reading it.

CBA

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 20-Sep-15 20:58:03

Andrew Gimson is a journalist. Nothing more.

jinglbellsfrocks Sun 20-Sep-15 21:00:09

I like this one best

granjura Sun 20-Sep-15 21:51:34

Well, give my Corbyn a billion times over ...

TRUMP!

We had visitors from the USA last week who sincerely believed he would be the best choice and that Obama was an Al-Quaida Muslim plant!!!
At least the debate in the UK, however polarised - makes some sort of sense!

soontobe Sun 20-Sep-15 21:58:49

I am corbyned out too.

However, it is pretty much a given that there will be more to talk about this week with whatever he does or doesnt do.

But on the other hand, I do have to keep reminding myself that he is only leader of an opposition party.

merlotgran Sun 20-Sep-15 22:17:03

Exactly! He is NOT the PM

durhamjen Sun 20-Sep-15 22:46:24

"But there is a deeper reason for objecting to the dismissal of political ideas simply because the person holding them looks doomed to failure. For here is a dreadful, self-imposed limitation on freedom of thought."

From the article in the OP. Exactly what you are trying to do to this thread.

I agree, granjura. Can you imagine Cameron doing what Trump tells him to do?

durhamjen Sun 20-Sep-15 23:31:41

That website is a bit worrying, Gracesgran.

A quite long post about one week on.

Gracesgran Mon 21-Sep-15 07:53:55

I agree that the website is very right-wing Jen; that's why I thought it was an interesting article as it was on a site our right-wingers might enjoy. Even if, as Jbf says he is "a journalist, nothing more" this is where he chooses to publish.

As far as I know there is not rule that says you must post on any particular thread so, for those who are "Corbyned out", we will no doubt see you when you are feeling better.

Of course the chat on here has followed the unprecedented, so called, news coverage which has been, in the main, an attack on him from dawn to dusk and, of course, some on here have enjoyed this. It will be nice to see if there is some less hysterical coverage over the next week. Perhaps, if we are not talking about silly things like his top button or who he slept with when he was single years ago it will be of less interest to some but I think others are truly interested in what has been a big upheaval in politics that may affect all the parties.

The conference is in Brighton this year and starts on the morning of Sunday 27 September running to Wednesday 30 September. There will be a National Women's Conference taking place on Saturday 26 September (my birthday smile) which may receive a little coverage as well so those who think the most important thing at the moment is whether Labour are in power or not and whether Corbyn is PM may want to have a few days news free.

Gracesgran Mon 21-Sep-15 08:09:13

Jen that is such a well argued article - not specifically about JC but about the old media and explains why some people are feeling "Corbyned out".

"My personal response to the, clearly-manufactured, outrage expressed in the media over these largely trivial details has been, "Oh will you people please grow up?" But of course the media will not grow up, and so they are throwing tantrums when they see things are not going their way. They do not like socialism, by and large, and so when they see a socialist doing well, they have to invent reasons for other people to get angry with him. In the cold light of day, Corbyn has done nothing notably wrong all week - certainly nothing that merits one-tenth of the controversy that should be raging over David Cameron violating an Election pledge - and it is clear that all of the controversies surrounding him are entirely artificial. And yet even supposedly 'reasonable' assessments are making Corbyn??s start as leader sound hapless and blunder-riddled."

The really interesting thing is that this is on what is little more than a blog - contributed to by more than one person but with none of the bells and whistles (and advertising) that the old media can call on when they move to the web.

I wonder if this will add to the death of newspapers, or at least the diminishing of their importance in people's lives and their influence over televised news. I do hope so.

Gracesgran Mon 21-Sep-15 08:14:15

Interestingly I see we start the week with the Tories press releases about their target - no money to back it up as far as I can see - for house building. My target is that everyone who needs one should have a home but that "target" is highly unlikely to get them built.

JCs first question was about housing in PMQs so speaking "softly" seems to have had some affect on the government, if only to attempt to get themselves on the front pages of the newspapers. Actually doing something to solve the problems may come later - or not ...

soontobe Mon 21-Sep-15 08:15:27

I dont think he was single. He was married wasnt he?
I too am not much interested, but now I am going to have to read the other thread properly.

soontobe Mon 21-Sep-15 08:17:16

I dont like things being trivialised to such an extent that is makes untruths. Or distortions to such an extent that impressions of untruths are made.

soontobe Mon 21-Sep-15 08:18:55

People are now going to say words such as banter, joke, irony, etc. But things shouldnt effectively lose truth.

Gracesgran Mon 21-Sep-15 09:32:20

Not banter but you are, in my opinion, focusing on trivia.

jinglbellsfrocks Mon 21-Sep-15 09:45:05

Some people say he's married more women than he put in his shadow cabinet.

Sorry to be trivial
