Most people killed in a hurricane are the very poor, who have little and can't afford to flee.and leave what little they have. Haiti has such awful poverty. We visited it many years ago and were horrified by the level of despair and poverty then, in 1982.

Nothing seemed so desperate in Jamaica despite hard times there. The people in Haiti have not ever recovered from deforestation or the earthquake. America should fair better.
We lived through a bad hurricane in Jamaica, it is very frightening, but we lived in a strong,.secure house , thank goodness.
