Who watched it last night? I have it saved on catch up, so will start this thread and then put my fingers in my ears so as not to hear any spoilers...

It was everything you might have expected, including little bits of trailed plot that will come in for the next series. Bit disappointed with Shirley MacLaine; they didn't seem to have made the most of her. Maybe that's to come.

I have only seen one episode so far and don't feel an urge to watch it, but I do enjoy the trailers that show Maggie Smith coming out with her brilliant quips.

Greatnan Mon 17-Sep-12 13:00:13

I loved it!

Gagagran Mon 17-Sep-12 13:39:25

I loved it too!

Notsogrand Mon 17-Sep-12 13:51:58

I loved it too!
Is anyone else waiting for the servant the Lord had a fling with to turn up with a baby boy who will be first in line?

Gagagran Mon 17-Sep-12 14:14:15

Well even if she did turn up with a baby, it could never be in line as it would be illegitimate so I reckon Matthew and Mary will probably produce the next heir at the end of this series!

kittylester Mon 17-Sep-12 14:21:35

I've recorded it as I HAD to watch the last George Gently. sad

Greatnan Mon 17-Sep-12 16:02:22

Didn't they cover the illegitimate baby story in the last series - I think the housekeeper was very kind to the unmarried mother. I am going to have to google the story lines from last time! (Did somebody just ask about memory)

Ella46 Mon 17-Sep-12 16:16:15

I loved it too!
Greatnan That baby was someone elses not Lord G's.

Greatnan Mon 17-Sep-12 16:20:15

Oh, it is coming back to me now! (See thread on memory!) It was Lord Grantham himself who had a bit of a fling when he was very worried about Lady Mary. (Well, they always have an excuse).

baNANA Mon 17-Sep-12 16:48:37

I loved it and I loved the new John Lewis ad. shown in several breaks thought it was very cleaver.

gracesmum Mon 17-Sep-12 19:27:22

John Lewis do good ads don't they? I particularly liked the one about a woman's life from birth to being a mother and (I think) grandmother to the song "Always a woman".
Good old escapist costume drama - thank you ITV!!

POGS Mon 17-Sep-12 21:40:53

baNANA

John Lewis ad is really clever.

I really enjoyed it, I love to look at the costumes and the sets. The dresses are so lovely does anyone else envy the style of the day? Before any old misery points out, only for the wealthy, I know.

Mind you, you had to be tall to carry them off, so that's me out then. sad

Anagram Mon 17-Sep-12 21:54:21

Yes, I do love the style of the period for women - being tall, I think I could have carried it off....
I just love the way Downton immediately wafts me off into another world - thought last night's opening episode was perfect!

harrigran Mon 17-Sep-12 22:01:24

Lovely clothes, a great start to the new series.

Ella46 Mon 17-Sep-12 22:04:32

harri apart from that shapeless grey thing that Mary had on when she argued with Mathew! It was ghastly. grin

Anagram Mon 17-Sep-12 22:10:32

It was odd, wasn't it? It looked as though it had some sort of locking device on the front..

crimson Mon 17-Sep-12 22:18:05

The last series was so daft I didn't bother with this one [I loved the first series]. Think I'll give it a go from what you've all said.

glitabo Mon 17-Sep-12 22:23:47

I loved it too, and I really liked the wedding dress.

merlotgran Mon 17-Sep-12 22:26:45

There are still some daft moments, crimson, particulary regarding Lady Cora's money but I won't say any more wink

yogagran Mon 17-Sep-12 23:05:20

I missed all the John Lewis ads as I recorded DA so I could watch it later uninterrupted by the breaks hmm

annodomini Mon 17-Sep-12 23:17:58

Am I in a minority? I took a look at DA once and decided it wasn't for me.

kittylester Tue 18-Sep-12 14:43:45

Me to yoga will have to stop fast forwarding quite so much.

Marelli Tue 18-Sep-12 14:55:01

Tell me, though - what is the thing about the money and the new husband (Penelope Wilton plays his mother)? confused
