Who watched it last night? I have it saved on catch up, so will start this thread and then put my fingers in my ears so as not to hear any spoilers...

Mamie Tue 18-Sep-12 15:01:09

The father of the fiancee who died has (probably) left Matthew his fortune. Mary wants to use it to rescue Downton, but Matthew says it would be wrong as Lavinia's father didn't know that she died of a broken heart because he loved another.
To be continued...

Marelli Tue 18-Sep-12 15:08:16

Ah! I remember now - he was having a fling with the lady who is now his wife, and then she (the fiance) sort of faded away and died, didn't she? Thank you, Mamie! smile

Anagram Tue 18-Sep-12 15:18:04

I don't think they had a fling, did they? confused If so, it was an unconsummated one - Lavinia died of Spanish flu, after making Matthew promise to be happy with Mary....[noble death-bed speech]

merlotgran Tue 18-Sep-12 16:03:56

Man up, Matthew. You'll need all that money to keep the old girl in acid drops.

Marelli Tue 18-Sep-12 18:55:34

Oh - did he not sort of 'fancy' Lady Mary, then? Oh, I wish I'd watched it properly, now! confused

Anagram Tue 18-Sep-12 18:59:44

Oh yes, by that time they definitely 'fancied' each other - but it was too late because he was engaged to Lavinia (I think Matthew is very moral!). I think the did share a kiss after a dance which Lavinia witnessed - hence her deathbed wish...

Marelli Tue 18-Sep-12 20:16:08

Got it - I remember now - (didn't take much,did it!) grin

Anagram Tue 18-Sep-12 20:41:11

Don't worry, Marelli, I drive OH mad sometimes when he's trying to explain or describe something to me - I have to be told things which he thinks are irrelevant, but to me make all the difference between comprehension and total bewildermet! grin

Greatnan Tue 18-Sep-12 21:13:43

Lavinia's death bed request was reminiscent of Dora's to Agnes in Great Expectations.

johanna Tue 18-Sep-12 21:26:52

Merlot is right, Matthew needs to man up!
What a weak man. Well, only someone like him would marry the bitch.

Anagram Tue 18-Sep-12 21:37:51

That's a bit extreme, johanna...

crimson Tue 18-Sep-12 22:03:01

Did all this happen in one episode?

merlotgran Tue 18-Sep-12 22:10:42

grin crimson Not quite but I hope this series doesn't rush along at the pace of the last one. I think that illegitimate baby aged about 14 months in a week. shock

Anagram Tue 18-Sep-12 22:11:48

He's the new footman now! grin

merlotgran Tue 18-Sep-12 22:15:10

David Copperfield, Greatnan

Anagram Tue 18-Sep-12 22:46:56

Of course!

Hunt Tue 18-Sep-12 23:19:19

It's not real history but I love it!

Yummygran Wed 19-Sep-12 14:39:36

A friend of mine is a make-up artist on the series, she had a wonderful time despite having to get up at the crack of dawn six and often seven days a week! What a great way to earn a living!

Greatnan Wed 19-Sep-12 19:30:57

Thanks, granny23 - and I was watching the film yesterday!

Something I saw in the Telegraph Birthdays Sept 27th. Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zita Jones have the same birthday with a 25 year gap....it made me think of Lady Edith in DA who has not fared too well up to now. I think by her marriage to Sir Anthony Strallan she could, in the end, fare better than her two sisters....How many of you are still watching DA?

harrigran Thu 27-Sep-12 12:20:32

Yes, still watching, but don't think this series is as good. Disappointed with Shirley McClaines character.

MaggieP Thu 27-Sep-12 13:01:20

Enjoying it so far but fear it may coincide with Homeland which returns shortly!
Then there's always one to record, and there are so many new Autumn progs beginning to appear, we have the problem which to watch next and when!......

absentgrana Thu 27-Sep-12 13:09:41

annodomini You are not alone. I watched the first episode of the first series and found it ridiculous, full of anachronisms and inaccuracies and a poor production, so I haven't watched any of it since.

Mamie Mon 15-Oct-12 14:15:28

Oh dear, poor Sybil. Actually a better episode last night, I thought with some good acting, especially Maggie Smith. What will happen now?
BTW what was it in Bates's mattress?
