What makes a celebrity?

Is it just me or are there too many so called celebrities today.
Having just watched a TV programme containing 8 of these modern day inventions I realised that I actually recognised only 2 of them!
I'm sure years ago a "celebrity" had to have done something worthwhile rather than just appeared on TV for 2 minutes several months ago.
Is it just me or do others feel the same? hmm

Celebrity changed.
I think it changed with the increase in 24 hour news and media publications. They have pages and internet inches to fill on a round the clock basis.

I do actually think it has changed some womens' livs in particular.
Looking "fit", pert, shaking your bot, taking selfies on a daily basis can get you into these places.

The world changed, and I dont think that the genie is going to go back into the bottle.

A lot of celebrities just seem to be famous for being famous. They don't seem to do anything other than been on the TV at some point or go to the right parties. The sad thing is many children see them as role models. They want to be celebrities as it's a way of being famous and making a quick buck.

It seems a sad society that honours people like Joey Essex just for being uneducated or Kim Kardashian for having a big (not as big as mine but I'm not a celebrity) bum.

I can't help wondering how one can be a 'star' of 'reality TV'... come to that how one could be a 'star' actor or actress, if Ive never heard of them!

I do think that there are a few Z list celebrities who are "interesting", in the way of, if you were at a party, some people would be intrigued by them.

I also think, that when celebrities are whereever, say a premier, that the Z list ones are very well aware that they are not in the same league/category as actors and singers etc who have real talent.

This reminds me of Lauren Bacall being asked in an interview how she enjoyed working with such a big star as Nicolle Kidman - a star ?
I like her and enjoyed working with her but a star after such a short career ?

I am watching the new Celebrity Big Brother blush. This time the participants are 50/50 from USA and UK, and I find none of them interesting. Most of the Americans are known for their sex tapes, some being professional porn stars or just loudmouths! One woman has already been thrown out when it was discovered that she was shown on FB in a Hitler costume in front of a concentration camp backdrop, stating that he was a good man! The British group also includes some with annoying or confrontational behaviour. This may be the first time that I give up on the programme!

What makes a sleb? The mega!
We used to have people from many areas of life who were deservedly famous. Now the media foists on those willing to read /watch the minute details of the lives of pop stars and people famous for being famous.
No wonder many children nowadays, when asked what they would like to be when they grow up now answer 'I want to be famous!' instead of naming a profession or activity, scientist, doctor, explorer, train driver, hairdresser. When pressed as to what they want to be famous for they don't know. Appearing on television, wearing the latest clothes and being seen with other celebrities is seen by many as a complete lifestyle, so sad.

Oh dear - 'mega' should have been 'mejia' for 'media'.
Fat little fingers (mis)strike yet again!

And as if it couldn't get any worse, last night Kanye West announced that he is going to run for president in 2020.

shock

shysal Mon 31-Aug-15 13:29:08

Donald Trump too! shock

The frightening thing is: Kanye West would probably have a bigger following than Donald Trump.

These z listers have a name too- they seem to be referred to as "slebs" in the rubbishy gossip magazines at checkouts. I would read them but I don't know who these people are!
