We're giving away an Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet worth nearly £150 and a signed set of Sarah Ferguson's series of children's books Helping Hands. Three runners-up will also win a signed copy of one of the books.
The Duchess of York’s Helping Hand stories tackle issues that all children face as they are growing up. The first three in the series are ‘James and the Bullies’, ‘Daisy learns about Strangers’ and ‘Holly’s First day at School’.
Are your grandchildren heading to school this September? Holly’s First day at School might be the perfect story to read with them in preparation. A small child’s first day at school is a big step forward for both children and parents. For Holly, her worries about not being with her Mummy are soon forgotten as she meets new friends and starts to learn new things. The day passes in a whirl: reading, playing, lunchtime and, Holly’s favourite, drawing. So busy in fact that, before she knows it, it is time to go home.
The Duchess is passionate about helping children and believes that storytelling is a very effective way to introduce them to challenges that are often difficult to talk about: “My hope is that parents and grandparents will read the books with their children and talk about the stories and the issues they raise afterwards.
As they describe a fictional situation, the stories introduce the topics in a relaxed way which children can engage with and ask questions about. We are all increasingly aware of the importance of talking about difficult experiences as a healthy thing to do: the Helping Hand stories aim to encourage the habit from an early age.”
Each book also contains 10 helpful hints to give parents practical ways to help deal with the issue raised in the story. The hints were contributed by leading child psychologist, Dr Richard Woolfson. The series has been illustrated in full colour by award-winning illustrator Amit Tayal.
