What do you think about pet insurance?

I've had my cat since he was about a year old. I got him from the Cat Protection League and have sensibly (?) paid pet insurance premiums for last 11 years. He's always had check-ups and relevant injections over the years, and his last check-up showed that he would need a tooth extracted. This was carried out the other day and the bill was a staggering £380!! Even with the pet insurance I still had to pay £180. I'm now questioning the sense of paying the monthly £18 premium for this - I'd have been as well just paying the full amount outright, as because he's 12 the cost for any operation is £105 plus 20% of the full amount due. Anyone else feel as if they've been stung this way? hmm

My daughter was very glad this year that she had insurance for her three year old Labrador. He had a double pneumothorax caused by bulliae on the lungs. Needed X-rays, MRI and major emergency surgery to remove about 12% of his lungs. As it's a rare condition he had to be treated at a specialist vet research 'hospital' in kept in their intensive care unit with a round-the-clock nurse. The cost - nearly £8,000 - paid promptly by her insurer. I don't know what her premium is but whatever it is, she has had her money's worth already. He's fine now.

After feeling as if I'd been paying through the nose for my cat's insurance for years, I cancelled it after he had as tooth removed. It was costing me £18 per month, which I could little afford. Poor wee lad then became ill with renal failure. By this time the policy was cancelled and I'm left with a bill for £700 because he was 'in hospital' at the vet's for week before he had to be put to sleep. In future (because we WILL have another cat), I will definitely take on insurance again. sad

I've had insurance for Millie-dog since we got her as a rescue 11 years ago. We've used it a few times for some treatment, but I always think it's best to have it in case SHE causes an accident if she were to get out. It costs an arm and a leg but now she's nearly 15 I think we will just carry on forking out until her clogs are popped - I love her dearly but oh, she's such hard work.....
