I Don’t watch it often , but just turned on only to see the graphc stabbing of the character Shona by her on screen son on Coronation Street, mainstream T.V between 7.30 & 8 pm.
I do wonder if T.V imatates reality as programme makers say it does OR does it normalise & promote it?
Personally I think it’s wrong, lots of youngish children are still up at this time , & I’m sure that a lot of parents would not have been expecting this level of violence so early in the evening.?Goal posts are being moved Imo!

Ohhps Title should say Too Graphic not to graphic !?

Bridgeit Mon 04-Mar-19 20:31:52

Ohhps even worse she may have stabbed him, either way it’s too early for this sort of violence.

Urmstongran Mon 04-Mar-19 20:35:07

Love it Bridgeit might a suggest a drop more water with it in future?

Sorry I really wasn’t being mean! You truly made me giggle having 3 attempts. ???

Gonegirl Mon 04-Mar-19 20:37:09

She stabbed him. The one with the knife got stabbed himself.

Will have to wait and see how they handle it from now on.

Gonegirl Mon 04-Mar-19 20:39:03

I don't think you can connect it with the horrific teenage stabbings happening at the moment.

Urmstongran Mon 04-Mar-19 20:56:19

I don’t watch any soaps (only because I love reading so much) but isn’t this violence a bit much before the 9pm watershed - or doesn’t that count any more?

megan123 Mon 04-Mar-19 21:01:28

I thought there was a watershed for a reason. Far too graphic for earlier in the evening.

Bridgeit Mon 04-Mar-19 21:04:39

Well Urmstongran , I needed a drop of the strong stuff to calm me down ??????

Urmstongran Mon 04-Mar-19 21:08:34

Haha! Love it Bridgeit perhaps best I stick to my book then (although to be honest it’s a bit boring which is why I’m on here!).

Bridgeit Mon 04-Mar-19 21:08:51

The watershed starts at 9pm, personally I think tonight’s episode over stepped the mark.
Violence on screen seems to be not only acceptable but expected these days very sad IMO

Bridgeit Mon 04-Mar-19 21:09:55

A much better idea Urmstongran ?

EllanVannin Mon 04-Mar-19 21:29:16

I only watch Home and Away.

Not watched Coronation Street since Minnie Caldwell, Ena Sharples and Martha Longhurst were in it. It used to be funny in those days. Not now apparently and there's enough violence and misery in the real world, never mind on early evening soaps.

You didn’t actually see any stabbing, to be fair. It was a bit like Rob n Helen on the Archers we all thought she would be the victim, but it turned out to be the other way round. It was rather unconvincing and a rubbish/ unoriginal storyline whichever way you look at it.

BlueBelle Tue 05-Mar-19 06:04:05

I personally don’t think the watershed exists any more look at what you see on the 6pm news
I do watch Corrie it was a bit graphic I agree but also a bit silly I thought and not very original but to be totally honest what the kids watch on Netflix is far worse

Bridgeit Tue 05-Mar-19 09:45:16

So are programme makers reflecting real life, or are they inadvertently encouraging and normalising violence & knife crime in particular ?Violence has always been with us, but the victims & perpetrators seem to be so young & ready to resort to murder without a second thought, either for themselves or their victims.

luluaugust Tue 05-Mar-19 09:52:11

Completely over the top and I agree at the same time horrific and silly. I think Coronation St is past its sell by date now all the stories have been done before.

FlexibleFriend Tue 05-Mar-19 09:54:53

Clearly it wasn't graphic as it was Shona who stabbed her son Clayton. They didn't show the stabbing at all just shots of Shona with blood on her clothing and neck etc. They also showed how scared she was at the thought of killing him and boy if anyone ever deserved it he did. Personally I think they made more of the fall out caused by stabbing and will probably continue to do so. Well done them.

Haven't watched it for yonks so clearly it's not what I remember.

Always have fond memories of Deidre and her mum, as far as cutting was concerned, they did it all with their tongues grin and quite brilliant Blanche was at it too.

trisher Tue 05-Mar-19 10:27:24

I haven't watched it for ages. Used to love it when it had that quirky northern humour with real characters. Unfortunately it went down the road of following other soaps . Bring back characters like Blanche and Deidre, Vera and Jack and script writers who could make a row over a plaster duck on the wall escalate into a hilarious battle of wits which didn't need violence to make it gripping and addictive.

humptydumpty Tue 05-Mar-19 10:47:50

does it normalise & promote it?

Sadly there seems to be a great deal of stabbing at the moment, I really don't think Corrie is doing either - it is all over the news (any time of day) anyway.

Willow10 Tue 12-Mar-19 07:50:18

I've often remarked about the fact that as soon as the character's have a problem, the very first thing they do is take to the bottle. Even the children! Also how often do you hear ' This programme contains scenes of violence which some people may find upsetting'. At 7pm? I think that is just a get-out for ignoring the 9pm watershed.

gillybob Tue 12-Mar-19 08:30:21

I’m not ashamed to admit that I love Corrie although sometimes the story lines are just too stupid for words. I’m loving the Maureen Lipman character “Evelyn” (Tyrone’s nana) . I hope she’s around for the long term . I wish they would get rid of that Battersby woman (Leanne) she’s so irritating and that creepy Simon Barlow.

I know it’s not real, I know it’s not real, I know it’s not real.....

sodapop Tue 12-Mar-19 08:36:23

I'm with you Gillybob I know the story lines can be silly but I still watch every episode. Maureen Lipman is great, I did like Blanche though, her put downs were classic.
