Ok so part of the town is shut off due to protesters causing diversions and more traffic fumes. Also the majority probably don't use public transport or ride a bike to work. When the kids did it it was on a school day not a weekend. And you can bet they drive with parents to school, clubs, visit friends etc to say nothing about gap years later when they fly around the world. Also I'll bet a lot go on foriegn holidays and certainly not biking in the countryside. Also the mess left behind shows they don't care about the environment much either. Why protest in busy streets etc when we have a huge green outside our council buildings? Anyone else feel like this or am I just a miserable OAP
Thoughts?

How does asking for views "frighten" someone off? I would think she would be happy to share her convictions.

I am genuinely interested in hearing her views and reasons - isn't that was XR is all about?

I am off until tomorrow - I hope Xrgran feels able to post her views

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 18:03:42

Not if you frighten her off. hmm

WadesNan Sat 20-Jul-19 18:01:18

Which means she could be in a position to give her views if she chooses to

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:45:12

Xrgran has stated she is a member of her local group.

WadesNan Sat 20-Jul-19 17:39:58

No GN has actually stated they are a member of XR, if any are I would be very pleased to hear there views. Xrgran has said she was there so I would be interested to hear her viewpoint

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:37:18

Might have been nice to hear the views of someone actually belonging to the organisation.

WadesNan Sat 20-Jul-19 17:35:02

Whats the problem Gonegirl - I am merely asking the views of someone who was actually there. hmm

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:33:43

Xrgran you are, of course, free (and welcome) to ignore the angry ones on here. smile

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:32:31

Oh great! hmm

WadesNan Sat 20-Jul-19 17:25:36

Xrgran - so glad you enjoyed your stay in Bristol. How do you feel about the man who was unable to be with his dying father, the people who missed hospital appointments, those late for chemotherapy sessions, not to mention those held up for hours in traffic jams. Why was it deemed a good idea to block a main road into Bristol, leading to 4 major hospitals? When there was a huge fire north of Bristol which closed roads, why was XR action planned for that area not cancelled to prevent even further chaos?

The blockade of the M32 was not included in the agreement with the police or the city council

Any support XR had amongst Bristol residents was quickly wiped out - check out the comments in the local newspaper.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:19:35

I really don't think we should aggresively jump on Xrgran. Her view would be very much valued by me at least.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:18:12

Xrgran have you listened to the piece they had on the Today Programme in the week? Would love to hear your views on it.

article here About 2 hours 35 mins in.

It's a good local start, Gonegirl

I have never understood why new houses are not built with solar panels as a matter of course - if they are facing the right way, of course.
Better public transport that works for everyone - cancel HS2 and spend the money on good transport for all areas.
And why do so many lights need to be left on 24 hours per day? Many street lights are left on 24 hours pd but they seem totally inept at doing anything about it.
Why do people wear t shirts indoors in winter with the central heating on full blast?

Callistemon Sat 20-Jul-19 17:06:21

There are always those who have a hidden agenda taking advantage of those with excellent motives and intentions.

It is worrying that ER could be being used by those intent on anarchy.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 17:04:42

I agree with you Xrgran. But it's the people behind XR, and their motives, that is worrying. Local groups are marvellous.

I like this

The science is there all you have to do is look at it
It is a hypothesis

Please try to persuade the countries on the list with the highest carbon emissions to get on board and do something:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_carbon_dioxide_emissions

The UK's carbon emissions per capita is 5.7 and I think they are hearing the message - other countries need your attention.

Callistemon Sat 20-Jul-19 16:54:34

caring and sincere people
try telling that to the man whom you prevented from reaching his dying father. sad

The science is there all you have to do is look at it
What are your scientific recommendations for changing course? Bearing in mind that humans always want to strive to progress, not to regress.
Realistically.

Why is anyone saying Extinction Rebellion are aggressive ? We start our meetings by a check in when we tell each other what we are grateful for or something wonderful that’s happened to us. We have a system of making sure every voice is heard not just the loudest and we all have training in non-violent direct action. On actions we have volunteers who check on the welfare of protestors and offer food and drink to not only protestors but those who are held up.

I’m quite shocked at some of the comments here.I presume you all vote? How did women go about getting the vote? Through direct action!

Xrgran Sat 20-Jul-19 16:45:52

Well I am one! So are many of my dear friends who’ve given up their spare time last week to go up to Bristol!
These are the most caring and sincere people you could ever come across and it makes me feel very emotional when I remember standing together on Southwark Bridge in November feeling part of such an amazing movement.
The science is there all you have to do is look at it and you’ll find out that there is a very real chance of human extinction by 2050 if we do nothing.
I’ve spent years writing letters and emails and handling out leaflets and it hasn’t worked. Our options are running out.

Callistemon Sat 20-Jul-19 16:36:52

Is he hoping to go to university next year? Will he be taking subjects that may help solve some of our problems? If so, perhaps you can all persuade him that he can put his energies into helping to save the planet in a practical way by finding solutions rather than demonstrating?

Urmstongran Sat 20-Jul-19 14:34:15

He might align himself with a different, less aggressive group though? You never know.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 14:18:21

I think they will have a job getting him to leave it alone. He will be 18 in September. I foresee trouble ahead. Sigh.

Urmstongran Sat 20-Jul-19 14:16:19

Sorry Gonegirl I did read it. I just didn’t mean to put that question mark at the end of my last sentence.
?

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 14:00:58

I feel sorry for all the genuine protestors.

Gonegirl Sat 20-Jul-19 13:59:34

You see. No one really reads anything.
