SubscribeOk so part of the town is shut off due to protesters causing diversions and more traffic fumes. Also the majority probably don't use public transport or ride a bike to work. When the kids did it it was on a school day not a weekend. And you can bet they drive with parents to school, clubs, visit friends etc to say nothing about gap years later when they fly around the world. Also I'll bet a lot go on foriegn holidays and certainly not biking in the countryside. Also the mess left behind shows they don't care about the environment much either. Why protest in busy streets etc when we have a huge green outside our council buildings? Anyone else feel like this or am I just a miserable OAP
Thoughts?

I think the things they have planned for October go far beyond road blocking. And parking nicely painted boats in Central London.
As I have said before on this thread.
Must admit when I read about him and the intentions of the extremist group I was shocked Gonegirl
Maybe your grandson will disassociate himself?
Now you know how bad my typing can be.
That was an accident! Typed it out once - saw it had gone into caps. Typed it again without realising previous one still there.
I hVE BEEN TRYING TO SAY THIS ON THIS THREAD, BUT HAVE BEEN IGNRED. oR MISINTERPRETED
I have been trying to say this on this thread, but have been ignored. Or misinterpreted.
cause not clause.
Yes. Exactly. My daughter and son-in-law have been reading up about Roger Hallam (I sent them the link to the Today prog article. They don't like the sound of him at all.
GS will (hopefully) be gently disassociated with XR. Bit sad in way. It is a good clause. But I think the people behind it all are definitely suspect. Not sure how much Hallam cares about the planet really.
XR allegedly want to bring down capitalism and leader Roger Hallam told an audience: 'We are not just sending out e-mails and asking for donations. We are going to force the governments to act. And if they don't, we will bring them down and create a democracy fit for purpose… and yes, some may die in the process'.
Roger Hallam an co-leader Gail Bradbrook are the intellectual driving forces behind the group, according to the report.
Former members of XR also claim that the group intended to target Heathrow airport with a drone.
Even with something that eats bacteria, there is the prob;em of getting it to the plastic pellets already littering the sea bed or floating in mile-wide swathes on the sea surface in calm areas. Relying on inventions is like a medieval Bible re-enactment relying on God to pop up, sort out the mess that human beings have made, and round off the story nicely. In real life, requiring that enter deus ex machina just doesn't work. We've got to do it ourselves - and that means governments as well as individuals.
There demands are so extreme and I have yet to see a properly reviewed policy paper from them that shows how this can be done without a complete economic and social collapse.
"Anyone seeking to do to the economy what Extinction Rebellion plans to do should surely put it in a party manifesto to be scrutinised by the media and voters"
What’s more, these policies – which will hit the poorest in society hardest – will have almost no impact on the planet’s climate, even in 100 years, unless we can ensure that emerging giants China and India also cut emissions.
Surely there must be some people with a brain in the ER group who can put together a coherent policy on how their demands can be achieved worldwide - and present it to all governments who are dragging their heels?
First, though, they need to properly put together a detailed analysis and report on exactly why they believe the world is going to end in 11 years' time, as well as their detailed, scientific views on how to prevent this. If, as thought, their present vague policy will cause hardship to the poor perhaps they would like to swap places with them as I presume that the poor are too busy struggling to live to be able to devote time to going on protests. ER would, I think, all be middle class or, in the case of (dare I mention her again) Emma Thompson, very wealthy.
the best outcome is if some very clever scientists can come up with bacteria to eat up the plastic....apparently this is possible, while at the same time we all cut down on using it.
I don't travel......and haven't been in a plane since 1980 so I am in favour of pressure to reduce air travel to the minimum.
We can all plant tress or grow stuff to replenish the air and just not be so materialistic.
Small changes will help.
The growing economies of India and China were a problem seen coming for a long time, maybe over 20 years ago. Yet we still buy the Chinese tat.....it is not needed.
We could and should all do our bit. Like in the War when everyone pulled together.
There are plenty of small changes that can help.
And no more blocking busy roads.
Take the protests to the politicians and the big businesses.
Urmstongran add in the poorest countries rely on tourism "air travel", and us buying "plastic tat" to survive ER need to research economics alongside ecology.
This is an eye opener:
The New Zealand government’s aim for net zero carbon emissions by 2050 would, according to a government-commissioned report, cost 16 per cent of GDP. The British Government’s own net-zero policy would, the Chancellor warned, cost more than £1 trillion.
What’s more, these policies – which will hit the poorest in society hardest – will have almost no impact on the planet’s climate, even in 100 years, unless we can ensure that emerging giants China and India also cut emissions.
And the only comment I've seen about the dying man is it was sad. Nothing to say whether you find it an acceptable side effect or not.
GoneGirl you don't like me? I'd never have guessed! I like to discuss/debate, you obviously don't and call it arguing.
I don't want to argue with you anymore janipat. I don't like you.
I haven't said anyone should stop flying. Read my posts.
have already commented on sad case of man and dying father.
I am in favour of the current demos. I worry about what might be involved in October.
That simple enough for you janipat?
GoneGirl your posts seem to alternate between thinking the leadership do want to cause economic meltdown, and being full of admiration for those being led by them.
Yes they are just getting in the way of ordinary people, they haven't inconvenienced a single politician or head of industry. To dismiss a man missing his "chance of a lifetime" to be with and say goodbye to his dying father as "collateral damage" and perfectly acceptable shows their calibre. Do you agree that it was acceptable?
You say no one's going to stop flying, but it is an individual choice whether to fly or not. If you care enough, and think aviation is so awful, then you'll make the decision not to fly, and not merely lecture other people about it.
Do you really believe their stated goals are achievable in the timeframe they state? I notice they don't have any researched means of doing so, just stamp their feet and say get it done.
And as others have said, disagreeing with XR's methods does not equate to not caring about the planet.
Sadly I don't think the powers that be will take much notice unless people protest. The world's resources are getting shorter even now. I don't really know what is in store for grand children's generation?
Can you give me chance to type a reply please!
The talking could, hopefully, influence gov policies.
Oh, and they want a state of emergency declared in regard to destruction of the planet.
Did you really think they are demonstrating just to get in the way of ordinary people?
Again I ask - how will parking a boat on a bridge or sitting in a bath in the middle of the road achieve that?
