Changing my User Name

(35 Posts)
ExD Fri 07-Aug-20 16:18:39

Quite early on I changed my User name on here, because it was obvious that anyone who knew me could easily guess who I am from the very obvious name I'd chosen.
I confessed, in passing, not long ago on a thread on here that'd I'd changed my name and got quite a number of quite abusive replies which puzzled me.
BUT reading the thread 'Moving away from family' I see the OPs husband has traced her on here from her user name, so I'm glad I changed mine.
But it makes me uneasy that he was able to trace her so easily when surely this is a confidential kind of group?
Was I being unreasonable?

ignore my last post, it was meant for another thread. Sorry. Brain boiling in this heat

It isn't only a username that can be used to trace us.

People who know us well, can probably work out who we are from the opinions we express.

Not sure about it though, Bluesky

The Australians do like to take the proverbial!

I’ve never felt the need to change my user name, I don’t really feel the need to give out private information, and don’t discuss issues within my family , I know once you start putting info out on the internet once it’s out there anyone can read things, I like to give advice if I can help someone, my posts are normally lighthearted posts, I can’t stand all the nastiness from some posters to others when they are obviously struggling, I’m not really surprised that the op husband traced her post, if you seek you shall find so to speak!

OOps, that last paragraph should have gone on another thread. Shows just how DUMB I am over posting in groups. I wish I could edit it out and repost it where it was supposed to go.
Perhaps I should stick to loitering in the background.

The abusive remarks about changing my name were from people assuming I'd something to hide. They inferred I'd written abusive posts myself - or had things I was ashamed of.
To change my name I think (can't really remember how) I contacted Admin, and I seem to remember it was very straightforward - they asked for my new name and that was that.

But the stars of this thread seem to have deserted the group, was it all a wind-up? Where are Morely and Nutri-what's-his name?

Sorry BlueBelle, I don't understand what you are asking me?

BlueBelle Fri 07-Aug-20 20:46:33

Alishka

Absolutely not! I'm an infrequent poster but serial name changer. I have my reasons.
btw this forum isn't a 'confidential kind of group* , is freely accessed by anyone, so that too might influence your decision too.

So if you can only change once how did this happen grannylaine
I must be very dim because I don’t find it obvious to recognise a style either

How do threads end up on newspapers and fb? confused

Because our posts don't belong to us and GNHQ has the right to use them in newspaper articles.
One Australian journal often quotes us word for word.

Some threads are duplicated on FB and Twitter too.

GrannyLaine Fri 07-Aug-20 20:19:42

As far as I understand it, GN will not help you with a name change unless there is a breach of personal security. I believe that it is possible to simply register again under another name though GN don't approve of name changing. It's actually surprisingly easy to recognise posting style when someone does this though.

BlueBelle Fri 07-Aug-20 20:12:59

If someone says they are a serial name changer then I m very suspicious of them
I can understand someone changing their name if they have someone who recognises them but someone who says they are a ‘serial name changer‘ I have to ask Why.??

Please can somebody explain HOW to change username. Might be useful.

Toadinthehole Fri 07-Aug-20 19:20:31

I changed mine once, and was told that was it.....you only have one spare. Alishka, how have you changed so often?

What do you think GN is? In case you hadn't realised Its business
The DM article may have been on FB and then picked up.

Thanks Witzend that's why is so important not to reveal unique stories and circumstances by which people who know us in real life could guess it's us!

MissAdventure Fri 07-Aug-20 19:14:08

Gransnet do put threads up on Twitter and Facebook, too.

Witzend Fri 07-Aug-20 19:07:01

@Bluesky, because journalists trawl posts to see if anything might amuse/appal their readers.
Maybe it’s more common for MN posts to appear in e.g. the Mail - the more outrageous Bridezilla ones seem to be popular.
E.g. the one where the bride sent the gift cheque back, saying she knew the donor had recently come into some money, so in the circs. she really ought to write a rather more generous cheque.
IIRC that one made the Mail on Sunday.

I'm relieved to find that when I google my name I only see links to the nursery rhyme!

pollyperkins Fri 07-Aug-20 17:30:21

I changed my user name very early on as my original one was very similar to my real name and I would be easily identifiable. But I also try not to put anything sensitive on here - I mean negative comments about family/friends who could recognise themselves. I try to stay on neutral topics though I have occasionally annoyed people on this site unfortunately. But thenI don't know them and they don't know me in real life.

MissTree Fri 07-Aug-20 17:27:50

I’m wondering about the ‘ abusive replies ‘ you received. Why would someone be abusive about changing your name ?

I try to be careful with my comments because as has been mentioned someone could type in your user name and piece together what you have said in your posts. I don’t even like saying where I live.

Oopsadaisy3 Fri 07-Aug-20 17:22:35

I’ve just googled my username, apparently I’m a blonde haired real estate agent in California!( She is on Twitter.)
I wish.
