weight of 'old' balls of wool

Usual weight of a ball of wool used to be 1 oz. Very occasionally 1/2 oz but not often.

Could you Google Peter Pan 4 ply and see what weight it was sold as?

I have a very old baby shawl pattern in crochet that I want to do. Only problem is the amount required is '14 balls'. Has anyone any idea of the weight of 'old balls' -sorry about that - and what the weight would be in wool today? The pattern is a Peter Pan Darling 3ply.
