I'm going to see my sons and their families this weekend. One of my granddaughters age 7 loves me to teach her the rhymes we used to use in the school playground for skipping and ball games.

Can anyone remember those rhymes chanted when two girls had a big long rope and all the other girls used to stand in line waiting for their turn?

Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Turn around.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Touch the ground.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear
Touch your shoe.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear
That will do.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Go upstairs.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Say your prayers.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear,
Turn out the light.
Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear
Say good night!

Fantastic! For a moment, I too was 7 years old! Thank you, you are such stars!
The only skipping one I can remember goes something like...
"Ah, we/the nanny goat she/ she locked the door and she turned the key"...and thats where my addled brain stops!
Recently, I taught my DG a game where you threw a tennis ball up to a wall. Each throw had an action & accompanying word: Plainy/Clappy/Turn around/To balcony/right hand/left hand/touch your heel/touch your toe/touch your knees/down you go. She loves it and has taught it to her friends. Funnily enough, my DDIL (her mum) had never heard these chants, so a generation has been skipped (excuse pun).

Granny was in the kitchen
doing a bit of stitching
(one girl skipping)
When in came a bogie man
and pushed her out
(second girl joins in skipping and replaces first by pushing her out)

Two baller :-
raspberry, strawberry, marmalade, jam .. tell me the name of your young man A, B, C ..... until the ball was dropped on a certain letter and his name began with that letter. We went on to weave a story about what month you would marry in A, B ... and then how many children you would have 1, 2, 3 ...

Another skipping rhyme went:

1, 2, 3, my mother caught a flea,
She put it in the teapot and made a cup of tea,
The flea jumped out,
My mother gave a shout,
And in came a bobby with his shirt hanging out.

Fantastic! I remember most of those.
also
The farmer's in his den,the farmer's in his den
ee aye addy oh the farmers in his den
followed by
the farmer wants a wife
the wife wants a child
etc. etc. with chorus and another child coming into skipping gp in each verse.

Anyone joining our skipping gp

Skipping rhyme - rather uncomplimentary!

There she goes, there she goes
Like an elephant on her toes
Look at her feet
She thinks she's neat
Black stockings and dirty feet.

And another one - one girl starting from each end of the rope;

Pass the doctor, how do you do?
Very well thank you
How are you?

(They shake hands as they pass each other)

Miss Lucy had a baby
she called it Tiny Tim Tim Tim
She put him in the bathtub
to see if he could swim swim swim

He swallowed half the water
he swallowed half the soap soap soap
miss lucy got excited so she grabbed him by the throat throat throat

Miss lucy called the doctor
miss lucy called the nurse nurse nurse
miss lucy called the lady
with the alligator purse purse purse

Don't ask what on earth that was all about !

GRANNY by Spike Milligan...

Through every nook and every cranny
The wind blew in on poor old Granny;
Around her knees, into each ear
(And up her nose as well, I fear).

All through the night the wind grew worse,
It nearly made the vicar curse.
The top had fallen off the steeple
Just missing him (and other people).

It blew on man; it blew on beast.
It blew on nun; it blew on priest.
It blew the wig off Auntie Fanny--
But most of all, it blew on Granny!!

gillybob Thu 15-Mar-12 14:28:30

.............used to get a slap for singing

Auntie Mary has a canary up the leg of her drawers !!

Grossi Thu 15-Mar-12 15:19:12

Vote, vote, for (name of child skipping, e.g. Elsie Smithers),
Calling (name of next child waiting to skip, e.g. Patsy) at the door.
Patsy is the one who makes all the fun,
So we don't need Elsie any more,
Shut the door.

Elsie has to skip out and Patsy skips in without missing a skip.

and she was disappointed
my word (name)
i'll tell your mother
for kissing (name)
around the corner
if you love him clap your hands
how many kisses will you
give to him
one
two
three...

harrigran Mon 02-Apr-12 23:30:12

You are a young granny granbunny if your Grandmother was born in 1909, my mother was born that year.

granbunny Tue 03-Apr-12 05:34:37

i'm not particularly young, harrigran.
you might be a bit... older... but that doesn't make me young!
my gran was in her mid twenties before she married and bred, my mum a bit younger, me about the same, my daughter a bit older.
its amazing what one family can accomplish in just over a hundred years!
