My Nans favorite saying was..Everything has its own importance.

I love sayings--I think its because they are a form of guidance and I need all the guidance I can get..

cheelu What does your gran's favourite saying actually mean? What sort of everything? What sort of importance? This isn't look before you leap or every mickle makes a muckle is it? Quite clearly everything does not have importance so what is at the heart of this? Totally confused.

annodomini Thu 17-Jan-13 20:06:44

Sayings, as you know, absent, often don't bear close examination. Anyone got examples of incomprehensible 'received wisdom'?

Cheap at half the price. What's that all about? confused

Ana Thu 17-Jan-13 20:12:18

On second thoughts, I can see that it could mean something would be cheap if it were half its price, but the phrase is usually used to indicate the opposite...

Marelli Thu 17-Jan-13 20:13:49

I've always wondered about that one, Ana - it would have to be 'cheap at double the price' for it to mean what it's supposed to mean confused.

Ee I'll go to the foot of our stairs.

Nanado Thu 17-Jan-13 20:19:18

What does 'queer as Dick's hatband' mean?

Anne58 Thu 17-Jan-13 20:25:05

Nanado if we told you that we'd have to shoot you.

Actually I haven't the faintest idea confused

Nanado Thu 17-Jan-13 20:32:11

Ariadne Thu 17-Jan-13 20:39:11

Ana Thu 17-Jan-13 20:41:23

Butty Thu 17-Jan-13 20:44:51

Perhaps your Nan was a student of Zen, cheelu wink

cheelu Thu 17-Jan-13 20:50:56

Trust me she wasnt, that was a nice saying that she had-- her others would give you nightmares....

Ariadne Thu 17-Jan-13 21:02:12

How was it nice? Just a statement, I'd have thought.

Ana Thu 17-Jan-13 21:03:49

Ariadne sad

annodomini Thu 17-Jan-13 21:10:20

Ariadne: red pens at dawn?

cheelu Thu 17-Jan-13 21:10:37

Ok Ariadne I have tried to ignore you but it has not worked So--

do you have the balls to tell me what your problem with me is???

cheelu Thu 17-Jan-13 21:12:59

you feel you have a bit of back up now and like a bully it has given you a bit of courage to say more.

So I am waiting

Anne58 Thu 17-Jan-13 21:12:59

Careful now Ted. (as in Father)

annodomini Thu 17-Jan-13 21:23:34

Ariadne is not, never has been and never will be a bully.
