Lads' mags - what do we think?

Make them mail order or from Sex shops only so that they are not on display in ordinary newsagents.

Calling them lads mags gives them a kind of 'nudge nudge, wink wink' rite of passage reputation but it's the thought of creepy older men reading them that makes me shudder.

I would like to see them removed from top shelves of magazine displays.

What do they mean by "lad's mags" ? If it's FHM it's just rather silly. If it's "top shelf" stuff, yes, take them off display and out of the shops. I would ban some magazines aimed at women and girls as well, though!

Agree wholeheartedly! Men who buy these magazines have a double standard about women, and reiniforce the view that it is ok to sexually objectify women. I cringe if I go into a home where these mags are lay around for children to see. They give children a warped view of adult women, and contribute to the premature deviant sexualisation of girls.

Canvas any treatment group of domestic violence perpetrators r child molesters and you can guarantee that they have a stash of these mags, which are a gateway to pornography. It's not about being narrow-minded. It's about having respect for women as thinking, feeling humans who are not there to be used abused by men.

Idiots like Helen Flanagan, who posed 'sexily' with a gun for photos recently, encourage naive girls to get involved in 'glamour' modelling for easy money. She'd be violently sick if she saw how many child abusers and domestic violence peretrators had used that image as masturbatory material.

Magazines carried by major retailers are surely tame stuff. The real worry is online porn which is hardcore, corrupting and easily accessed by young children. UK Feminista should re-direct their attentions to that.

Aren't the police already tackling hardcore?

I'd definitely like to see soft porn images disappearing from Newsagents. I do think their presence gives out an undesirable message about women's status in society.

It's not an either/or. As Petallus says,hardcore, online porn( especially involving images of children) is being tackled (although we know it's very difficult to do so successfully) but we can object to and take action against all types of porn - the organisations that make up UK Feminista are already doing sterling work in criticisng and campaigning against all types of porn and don't need to be told by anyone to re-direct their attention to online porn in particular. The point of this particular campaign is that they feel they have a case under the Equality Act so it gives them an opening to taking legal action. The cover pages that I see in my local high street retailers may be relatively tame but I believe they do contribute to promoting sexist attitudes and behaviour. They also potentially harm both young girls/boys/men/women by promoting an unnatural idea of what a woman's body should look like. So go Gransnet, support the campaign.

That's what I think Sel. The worst stuff is online. I doubt if newsagents mags harm anyone. They need to have something to " encourage" the blokes in sperm donating clinics.

Remove the magazines from newsagents, it gives young men a warped idea of what is acceptable.

I would remove them too, but I agree with Lily that some women's magazines don't do us any favours either.

I agree that all images which portray women as mindless pieces of meat whose sole purpose is to gratify men should be, at the very least, kept out of the reach of children.

Yes. I think it is relevant. It is one purpose these mags are used for.

I think most, if not all young men, will dabble with these mags at some point. But once they find their first girlfriend they quickly learn to revise their image of real girls/women.

As for old men looking at them, so what? Loneliness after later life bereavement might need to be consoled.

The internet with it's horrible hard and violent porn is another matter.

Men don't need the aid of dirty mags in order to produce a sample of sperm. We should give them credit for SOMETHING!
