Lads' mags - what do we think?

We've been asked to support a campaign called "lose the lads' mags" which is being run by UK Feminista and Object and is calling on retailers to stop displaying and selling lads' mags.

So we wanted to canvass views...

The campaigners argue these magazines encourage the idea that women are objects and so help to create an atmosphere in which sexual violence becomes acceptable. A group of discrimination lawyers claims that the display of these images amounts to discrimination against women and breaches equality legislation.

So what do we think?

I don't find support for these magazines at all entertaining, just sad. And I am neither bored nor lonely. This is a serious subject which deserves our attention.

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 18:12:13

I'm sure they have been exposed to a lot of things.

Will stop posting now as do not intend to provide any more entertainment for the bored or the lonely.

Jingle - do you find no significance in the fact that many young sex offenders have , indeed, been exposed to a diet of such images?

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 18:06:19

I doubt if if it is going to be a "diet" of it as such. Just a normal part of developmental curiosity. Or even just for the enjoyment. Sex is a hugely strong influence in young men. A bit of wanking over a dirty mag does no harm.

Greatnan Mon 03-Jun-13 18:06:10

You don't need to be a social worker to understand that a diet of such images is going to have a perverting effect on a young mind.
Many of them show women dressed as young girls, being 'punished' or adopting degrading position. And, yes, I have seen them - I used to confiscate them.

I would think a nervous young feller having to do the deed on demand in a clinic cubicle, is very likely to need a bit of help.

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 18:01:02

I'm sorry. I don't believe I am digging any hole. Just expressing my view. If it is different to yours, so be it.

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:59:23

Of course, I am not referring to extreme cases that social workers may come in contact with.

whenim64 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:59:05

Jingle hand up that spade out of that great big hole you're digging! grin

whenim64 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:57:55

Men don't need the aid of dirty mags in order to produce a sample of sperm. We should give them credit for SOMETHING! grin

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:57:37

I think most, if not all young men, will dabble with these mags at some point. But once they find their first girlfriend they quickly learn to revise their image of real girls/women.

As for old men looking at them, so what? Loneliness after later life bereavement might need to be consoled.

The internet with it's horrible hard and violent porn is another matter.

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:51:18

Yes. I think it is relevant. It is one purpose these mags are used for.

Greatnan Mon 03-Jun-13 17:45:56

Is your comment relevant, jingle? We are not discussing sperm donors, are we?
I agree that all images which portray women as mindless pieces of meat whose sole purpose is to gratify men should be, at the very least, kept out of the reach of children.

JessM Mon 03-Jun-13 17:45:49

Yes, remove them from view. We don't want our grandchildren being exposed to all this sexual material at a young age.
Top shelf, plain brown rappers , sorry wrappers (oops grin )
Also those borderline pornographic MTV type pop videos that are full of scantily clad singers simulating sex.

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:31:17

I take it they still get some donors doing it for money. [shrug]

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:29:42

Oh God! hmm I did n' t mean anything personal!

Congrats to them.

whenim64 Mon 03-Jun-13 17:24:48

Both my daughters' partners managed quite well without the dirty mags, thank you Jingle Two sets of IVF twins born without the aid of porn. angry

janeainsworth Mon 03-Jun-13 17:17:24

I would remove them too, but I agree with Lily that some women's magazines don't do us any favours either.

harrigran Mon 03-Jun-13 17:09:10

Remove the magazines from newsagents, it gives young men a warped idea of what is acceptable.

shysal Mon 03-Jun-13 17:03:36

Ban porn in all it's forms!

grannyactivist Mon 03-Jun-13 17:02:24

I absolutely endorse the points made by when and wholeheartedly support the campaign.

j08 Mon 03-Jun-13 16:58:37

That's what I think Sel. The worst stuff is online. I doubt if newsagents mags harm anyone. They need to have something to " encourage" the blokes in sperm donating clinics.

bluebell Mon 03-Jun-13 16:58:20

It's not an either/or. As Petallus says, hardcore, online porn( especially involving images of children) is being tackled (although we know it's very difficult to do so successfully) but we can object to and take action against all types of porn - the organisations that make up UK Feminista are already doing sterling work in criticisng and campaigning against all types of porn and don't need to be told by anyone to re-direct their attention to online porn in particular. The point of this particular campaign is that they feel they have a case under the Equality Act so it gives them an opening to taking legal action. The cover pages that I see in my local high street retailers may be relatively tame but I believe they do contribute to promoting sexist attitudes and behaviour. They also potentially harm both young girls/boys/men/women by promoting an unnatural idea of what a woman's body should look like. So go Gransnet, support the campaign.

petallus Mon 03-Jun-13 16:41:25

Aren't the police already tackling hardcore?

I'd definitely like to see soft porn images disappearing from Newsagents. I do think their presence gives out an undesirable message about women's status in society.
