I recently asked my Care Home residents what lessons they've learned from life that they would want to pass on.

What would your top five be?

Grannyknot Thu 30-Jun-16 07:35:20

Play the long game.
Change what you can.
Change means you have to change.
Do your bit to the best of your ability, care and competence and leave others to theirs (lead by example).
Be adventurous and have fun as often as possible (life is not all haha heehee).

Grannyknot Thu 30-Jun-16 07:38:42

The last bit should read (but life is not all haha heehee).

We live in a beautiful world, make the most of it
Help if you can
All things pass
Learn but don't hold grudges
Love is never wasted

TwiceAsNice Thu 30-Jun-16 07:49:52

Take risks rather than regret
It's never too late t o change
Love never dies
Do to others as you would be done by
Life is a gift don't waste it

Make the most of your educational opportunities.
Do unto others as you would be done by.
Embrace change if you are not in a happy place.
Make good, careful decisions about relationships.
Have good work/life balance, enjoy yourself.

I want to say be a good parent too the values of the next generation are our responsibility.
Oh and taking care of the planet...........better stop overthinking, boring myself now.

AlieOxon Thu 30-Jun-16 08:34:18

There is always more to learn, anyplace, anytime
Sometimes it's good to unlearn, too

Teetime Thu 30-Jun-16 08:59:43

Use silence
Listen hard and then listen again
Sleep on it- give your self time to process
Most things look better in the morning
Don't waste your life on people who drain you
Wear you best clothes don't save them up
Spend some, save some but have some fun.

KatyK Thu 30-Jun-16 10:00:48

Do your best
Accept what you can't change
Live in the moment
Be grateful for what you have
Be kind to yourself as well as others
Don't waste your time wishing you have what others seem to have

(Unfortunately I find it hard to practice what I preach!)

Jayh Thu 30-Jun-16 10:18:08

It is not all about you
Love unconditionally
Make your decisions and move on
Accentuate the positive
Lighten up

All advice I wish I had followed.

michellehargreaves Thu 30-Jun-16 10:18:10

Love your friends and family (they, and you, don't last for ever)
Whatever you're doing, do it to the best of your ability.
Be kind.
Cherish every moment and be conscious of the beauty that surrounds us.
Know that you can't do ,or have, it all.

michellehargreaves Thu 30-Jun-16 10:20:01

Having read all of your thoughtful posts, I have taken inspiration from them. Maybe it should be the top 20 things we have learned.?

MadMaisie Thu 30-Jun-16 10:37:04

Love friends and family.
Make the most of what you have.
Try and see other points of view.
Try not to react hastily, remember that once it is said or written down it can never be taken back.
Be brave, take the plunge into new experiences.

oznan Thu 30-Jun-16 10:43:05

Be thankful for what you have.
Treat all living beings with loving kindness.
Work with care and attention.
Brighten someone's world every day.
Feel the joy.

GdnGuru246 Thu 30-Jun-16 10:44:58

Value your good health
There are always two sides to a story/incident
Keep your friends close but enemies closer
Try and leave the world a better place
Be content with what you have

MiniMouse Thu 30-Jun-16 10:45:18

Take time to marvel at the small things as well as the big ones.

The smallest good deed is better than the best good intention!

Jayh Thu 30-Jun-16 10:58:26

I would add:
Know the difference between fact and opinion and you may well get to the truth of any matter.

nannypiano Thu 30-Jun-16 11:00:34

treat others with respect and they should respect you.
think about the good things in your life and be grateful.
try to give back a little to life regularly, (very rewarding)
be a good listener.
leave the past where it belongs and concentrate on the future.

Dandibelle Thu 30-Jun-16 11:12:27

Everything in moderation and
There are two sides to every story
??

POGS Thu 30-Jun-16 11:21:19

If somebody upsets you , move on, they will have to find somebody else to upset.

Be of good spirit but not be taken for a fool.

When love leaves you remember the wonderful times, not the bad.

A true friend is a rarity, if you find one you are blessed.

Learn to read between the lines, things are not always as clear as they first appear.

schnackie Thu 30-Jun-16 11:27:32

Some really good ones posted already. I would just add, no matter how tragic or hopeless your situation seems, there is always someone worse off than you, so be grateful for whatever little things you can find that are positive.

Rosina Thu 30-Jun-16 11:30:38

In this life you can laugh or you can cry - I've chosen to laugh.

Most important of all, for peace not only for yourself but for others too, and the only real 'instruction' given by the Dalai Lama 'Be kind'.

lizzypopbottle Thu 30-Jun-16 11:31:55

You can usually try harder.

Jaycee5 Thu 30-Jun-16 11:32:21

Trust yourself. I spent my working life as a solicitor doing a job I mostly hated. I realised before I finished studying but my mother thought that I was just having a wobble and told me that I had gone too far to give up. She thought that she was giving me a pep talk. I needed someone to say that I should do what would make me happy. I was having too many other problems to make the right decision.
Changing direction is not giving up or failing whatever anyone else may say.

radicalnan Thu 30-Jun-16 12:54:00

Don't trust the dog with your dinner.

Your clothes are not shrinking in the tumble dryer.

Machines that say 'free cash withdrawals' are lying.

Wait and see.
