UK not just England

I read the advice about how to cope in the heatwave. You say temperatures “in England” are due to continue to rise. The highest temp in the UK in recent days has been Porthmadog IN WALES. Why is it always that the UK is inevitably described as “England”? So frustrating for the rest of us British people!

Hear, hear!

Queen of England. English Parliament. English laws. So it goes on and on.

‘Twas always thus. UK =England. It needs to be challenged more.
It is pretty hot here in Scotland ??????? too.

Worse offenders - BBC sports commentators

Yes,indeed.

I don't think I've ever heard anyone say or read anywhere the term "English Parliament". There's no such thing anyway. There is a Scottish Parliament, a Welsh one (National Assembly for Wales), a Northern Ireland Assembly, and the British or UK Parliament.

I think England and Wales are often lumped together because they share the same laws for the most part. Scotland has different laws from the rest of the UK on many subjects and always has had.

It is argued by some that it isn't fair that England doesn't have its own parliament or assembly.

Do you live in England Baggs?

There are those who refer to the English Parliament, when there is no English Parliament. Their ignorance.

I have been hearing how hot it is in England, that Wales has had the top temperatures and that Scotland is scorching. I just wish some of the reporters and weather people took into account those of us in the East of England who, until the last two days, have just had pleasantly sunny afternoons and no scorching weather at all. It did get to 26 here today with a refreshing breeze.

Jalima1108 Sat 30-Jun-18 20:57:15

I have no idea.

I have been to Wales today and it was very very hot
But very enjoyable. smile

Anniebach Sat 30-Jun-18 21:16:54

North Wales had the highest temperatures not South Wales ,

Baggs Sat 30-Jun-18 21:20:59

Do you live in England Baggs?

No.

Baggs Sat 30-Jun-18 21:24:33

Although that should be irrelevant.

When I use a phrase like "it is argued by some" it means exactly that, no more and no less. It does not mean, for instance, that I make that argument.

Jalima1108 Sat 30-Jun-18 21:24:45

It was S Wales - so glad that I wasn't in N Wales then!!

annep Sat 30-Jun-18 21:25:09

I am un Northern Ireland. What annoys me is that we are not included in the AgeUk lottery and Saga magazine never have special offers here.

Jalima1108 Sat 30-Jun-18 21:31:22

Saga magazine

Anniebach Sat 30-Jun-18 21:34:31

Only a little higher in the North Jalima ?, just Wales has a North, Mid, South, West , it is a country not a county , even a slight difference in parts of the Welsh language in North and South

Anniebach Sat 30-Jun-18 21:40:57

A thought, one doesn’t hear North Scotland, South Scotland

Baggs Sat 30-Jun-18 21:43:46

Yes one does.

Baggs Sat 30-Jun-18 21:44:30

Also East Scotland and West Scotland. Why wouldn't one hear these geographical terms?

Anniebach Sat 30-Jun-18 21:45:42

I thought it was- in the North /South of Scotland ?

Anniebach Sat 30-Jun-18 21:46:40

Just thinking of the national weather forecast

Baggs Sat 30-Jun-18 21:49:41

Oh.

There's also northern Scotland, southern Scotland, and central Scotland ("the central belt"). I think descriptions of Scotland probably cover all the available English terms and, in some cases, Gaelic ones too.

Baggs Sat 30-Jun-18 21:50:17

Oh, I see. I never listen to weather forecasts.

Anniebach Sat 30-Jun-18 22:09:58

The weather forecast refers to Wales and Scotland but do mention at times some islands in Scotland, sorry I can’t recall the name
