Fly killer

We seem to have an influx of flies!! Why can I not get those cassette things that had yellow 'stuff' inside? I always found those very effective unlike my fly swat technique!

Have you tried Amazon.?

I do agree - flies seem far too quick for a swatter. Good exercise though! I use the old fashioned fly papers - they are impregnated with fruit glue now so they are not toxic, and as soon as there are a couple of flies stuck to the paper I change it for a fresh one. Remember when shops would have a dangling fly paper with no room left for even one more fly? Uggh! Aerosol cans of fly sprays are just so alarming - I can't imagine what we inhaled when using them in the past.

Mr. B chases them with one of those electric ‘tennis racket’ like fly swatters if they refuse to leave when motioned towards the door. It’s very entertaining.

Oh I’m watching this thread. I know what you mean kittylester. I miss those cassette type fly killers too but can’t remember the name.
I tried another type last year but they were pointless. I’ll have the make etc on my Amazon account. And the need for something will be here soon.

I have an electronic zapper, when they fly into the blue light there`s an almighty crack and the fly is no more. Bought mine from Amazon.

I’ve got one of those magnetic screens and they work well but get in the way so I sometimes forget (don’t bother) to attach them when my French windows are open. The buzzing fly is bad enough but what really turns it into a trauma is the trail of destruction caused by my cat’s grim determination to catch the darn things. He shoots about, knocking things off shelves, spilling my coffee, clawing up the curtains and using me like a piece of furniture to be clambered over. He has never, ever caught one.

I have the mesh nets with magnetic closing on my back door all year. Tie back when not in use, from Amazon £16. It is excellent.

kittylester Sun 28-May-23 11:19:17

Don't flies come in through open windows etc?

Hetty58 Sun 28-May-23 11:24:25

Mesh nets are great here. I have them over the back doors and some windows (the ones I open). I do have an electronic 'zapper' for emergencies, but don't like to use it - as the fly explodes, sending germs in all directions.

I have purchased in the past fly/bug spray from Amazon which didn’t contain any chemicals and it worked.

If I see the little black storm/fruit flies around I fill a bowl with a mixture of vinegar and sugar, cover with cling film, pierce lots of holes in the film. The flies are attracted to the mixture, fly in but cannot escape.

That is a great tip. Thank you.

I’ve been looking everywhere for one of those fly killers with the yellow block inside and can’t find any. I hate fly spray and can’t bear the thought of fly paper. Those blocks used to keep them away altogether.

As I said upthread, if you search for fly killer cassettes on Amazon they are still available.

Thank you I’ll take a look.

It looks as though these cassettes contain Transfluthrin - I would not be happy having that in my house. I will continue to hop around with my fly swat!

Hetty58 Sun 28-May-23 22:15:19

Luckygirl3, I don't like any chemicals around - especially with my allergies, the grandchildren and pets about, it's too much of a worry.

Jackiest Sun 28-May-23 22:16:00

Sucking them up with a vacuum cleaner can be tried for a change from the fly swat.

Luckygirl3 Mon 29-May-23 08:04:23

Vacuum cleaner is an interesting idea - all we need is for them to keep still!

Sago Mon 29-May-23 09:18:10

Vapona fly cassettes are still available.

I have those white “ string “ curtains you can get . I bought mine from Dunelms ( £10 ) , I have one each on both my back door and inner patio door , they work extremely well .
I tie / pull them back when not in use . I found the dark colour ones don’t work , maybe the flies can’t see the black ones and fly straight through !
