Cricket - a game for old bats?

Is cricket a world exclusively for men? Not according to Harry Pearson in his guest blog post as he paints an evocative picture of the Yorkshire terraces.

Add your comments - and you could win one of five copies of his new book, The Trundlers.

Just to upset the apple cart, cricket to me is like watching paint dry.

I do not like cricket at all, but am always happy to have it on radio or TV, as opposed to some other sports, and that is because of the commentaries! It was, of course, much better when Theseus had the TV on, the sound off, and Radio 3's commentary running.

DS2's wedding reception was at Headingly (he played rugby for Leeds and they use the same complex. I swear Theseus was more excited at looking out on to the cricket pitch than he was seeing his son married!

"No-body does it better!" (I am singing that, but it is just as well you cannot hear!)

I just found the tea towel I was given in 70, when I first lived in the UK and friends thought it was funny I didn't 'get' it. Tattered and torn, but still legible:

CRICKET as explained to a foreign visitor:

You have two sides, one out in the field and one in.
Each man that is in the side that's in goes out and when he's out he comes in and the next man goes in until he is out.

When they are all out, the side that's out comes in and the side that's been in goes out and tries to get those coming in out.

Sometimes you get men still in and not out.

When both sides have been in and out including the not outs

that's the end of the came.

Didn't help me much smile

granjura we have this on sale in the print room at Amberley Museum, our visitors from overseas find it quite amusing, but as you say, not very informative. Strangely enough it is one of our popular items, reprinted several times during the season.

Will we do it again? This hot weather must be really hard on the bowlers.

Nonu Thu 18-Jul-13 08:21:08

Not sure , will consult the oracle AKA Mr N . and get back to you !!

Aka Thu 18-Jul-13 08:27:37

Stop taking my name in vain!

annodomini Thu 18-Jul-13 08:39:14

They play around the world in hot conditions. Unfortunately so do the Australians!

Nonu Thu 18-Jul-13 09:39:48

he thinks 60/40 to England .

Mind you he is hoping it will carry on as he has a ticket for the Oval on Monday . So, we will see what we will see . Fingers and toes crossed.

Aw shucks , AKA .

PRINTMISS Fri 19-Jul-13 07:47:03

Can't imagine what the heat must have been like out there yesterday, and another scorcher today. If it is like this on Monday Nonu, I do not envy Mr.N his seat at the Oval!

PRINTMISS Sun 21-Jul-13 20:23:20

We did it again. well done England. Sorry Mr N. will not be able to use his ticket Nonu, perhaps he is relieved in view of the heat!

Nonu Sun 21-Jul-13 20:38:43

WELL DONE ENGLAND!!!!!!!!

Printmiss , he is a bit sad not to be going , but the way it played out , he will get his money back + the train fare , so that has cheered him a bit .
wasn"t it a good match ?

smile

Notso Sun 21-Jul-13 20:42:05

What a great match...well done England!!!!!

PRINTMISS Mon 22-Jul-13 08:13:00

We only see the high-lights, as we just have basic tv channels. Must have been great day for spectators, and I am glad Mr.N will not be out of pocket, Nonu even though disappointed.

Nonu Mon 22-Jul-13 09:38:13

Thanks Printmiss , I will tell him .

Third test started today - I will not be able to watch the early evening news as the other half does not want to know what has happened until we watch the higlights on Channel 5 (we don't have Skye or such). I am, however going to take a quick look at the news on the web, because I can't wait!. Will England win again?

Nonu Thu 01-Aug-13 17:46:26

We do have Cable PRINTMISS , but because Glorious Goodwood was on that took preference .

Will watch highlights at 8pm .

Fingers crossed eh !!

PRINTMISS Fri 02-Aug-13 08:15:27

Hello Nonu. My mym used to work on the 'Tote' (my dad was a bokmaker, along with lots of other things!), and she loved Goodwood. We live quite near of course, and have visited occasionally, it really is Glorious. As usual the media are writing England off because they failed to get Australia out on day one. Wish we had some positive comments sometimes.

Nonu Fri 02-Aug-13 12:46:59

Printmiss , we could be twins , My Mum also worked on the Tote before she married "Dear old Dad" .

Goodwood certainly looks a lovely place , the thing I find with going racing it is a very tiring day !

Cricket , don"t know what has been happening this morning so will get back to you later !!!

Nonu Fri 02-Aug-13 14:07:45

Hello GNHQ , I still have not received my copy of THE TRUNDLERS .

BOO HOO !!!

PRINTMISS Tue 06-Aug-13 07:45:58

Well, we didn't actually win the latest game did we, but we certainly organised the weather! Probably not a lot of people here very bothered, but I do like cricket, all those lovely young men nicely dressed, getting themselves into some very interesting positions, and of course there is the batting and bowling. Come on, let's have some good old fashioned pride here, after all most of the England team are home-bred.

kittylester Tue 06-Aug-13 09:49:19

I like cricket too Printmiss. smile

I'm a bit disappointed that it all ended as it did. England need to win the last two tests to emphasise their superiority! It's better to retain the Ashes by winning rather than not to lose them, don't you think?

Nonu Tue 06-Aug-13 10:14:33

Hi , Printmiss , well you know what I feel .

Still we live to fight another day eh !!
