Singing can make you happier and make an enormous difference to your life, says choirmaster Richard Scott in his guest blog for us.

Have you found the same? Will you be giving it a try? Do add your comments on his post here

I joined a community choir of approx. 100 people last October and even though I don't have a great voice in that number of people it doesn't matter TOO much, as long you can stay on pitch. I literally bounce home every Tuesday night and the feeling stays with me all week. We sing at a variety of concerts to raise funds for various charities and this I feel makes it a worthwhile hobby. Our choirmaster only auditions in order to know where to place you in the choir and does it privately. He also believes that everyone can sing with the right encouragement. I would recommend it to everyone.

I'm a member of a Sweet Adelines International barbershop chorus. Sweet Ads has choruses right around the world, it began in America in the late 1940's (I think) and is still growing. We sing unaccompanied four-part harmony and I love it. It keeps my mind active (especially now that I'm part of the 'retired group') and the singing and friendship of the others is so good for mental health ie keeping those low feelings that can creep up away. Are there any other Sweet Adelines out there in Gransnet land?? Kiwibird

Not a Sweet Adeline, but I was fortunate to watch a barbershop quartet singing in Mystic, on a trip to New England. They greeted us as we arrived to look round a heritage centre, dressed in their striped jackets and boaters. Sublime! smile

It is the most uplifting thing to do if you enjoy it. All those endorphins-so good for you!

If there is anyone in the Wantage, Oxon area wanting to join us go to http://wantagechoralsociety.wordpress.com/welcome/

A few of us are at the Royal Albert Hall on July 7th to sing Verdi's Requiem with the Really Big Chorus.

Have a go, you can always decline if it doesn't suit, but you never know where it might lead...

My father was a sales rep and occasionally I would spendvthe day with him. On the return journey we would sing songs from the musicals. It was a very special memory.

I've sung in choirs off and on throughout my life. I've been on several of Gitika's singing days Maniac, and loved them.
I now sing in Rock Choir and find it energising. As well as exercising my voice i have to memorise lyrics and choreography, great for the brain cells! My husband doesn't enjoy my practising at home, which is a shame.

I love singing, but have a truly dreadful singing voice, so bad that when singing to my DGD she took her dummy out and put it in my mouth......grin

I sing and play ukelele (both, badly) with a local group and at various public gigs. There are enough people in the group who know what they're doing to disguise/drown out those of us who don't.

If you're belting out Jolene or Fat Bottomed Girls or Delilah, it's impossible to be fed-up smile

Treebee So glad you enjoyed my daughter Gitika's singing days .She really is an inspiring teacher who believes anyone can sing.
I have been on her singing workshops and would go more often if they were nearer.Where are you?

uknana Enjoy Mr Verdi's Requiem. I did a come and sing day of that back in March.
London is too far, but that night I am doing a concert with the community choir I sing with and the music this year is particularly banal.

I wish I could sing but I can't. It's not just a case of not being able to sing on key or hold a tune, I just can't open my mouth in public! I went to a singing for beginners workshop and couldn't make a sound so just sat and watched in admiration as the leader took 30 strangers and created a choir! I can't even sing at weddings or funerals but I can imagine how wonderful it must be to just sing with gusto!
