This week's blog from Eileen Sutherland describes her thrill at discovering body surfing and zipping on her wetsuit and throwing herself into the waves in her sixties. Have you taken up anything in granhood? Are you still planning a whole new career as a female wrestler?

My ambition is to learn to use a sewing machine. Just not quite yet.

You are quite right j08 - there should have been a link in there. Trying to do too many things at once <wonders if newsletter will ever be finished this week>

I have now done a sneaky thing and put it in - but I hereby admit that I made a right pig's ear of it the first time round.

" in the North Sea off the coast of Northumberland."

Woman's mad! I wouldn't even paddle in that! hmm

Elegran Thu 27-Jun-13 14:21:43

Anyone else going round and round in circles from this thread via "Eileen Sutherland" in the OP back to the thread again? Apart from J08 - at least I think that is what she is whispering.

j08 Thu 27-Jun-13 14:23:27

Well yes Elegran. It's still cocked up. But I didn't like to mention it again to Ge - you-know-who!

Elegran Thu 27-Jun-13 14:28:08

Geraldine must have a lot on her mind. Keeping the inmates in order in the asylum. Plus dealing with the cake mountain.

KatGransnet (GNHQ) Thu 27-Jun-13 14:55:11

All fixed! grin

"When a likely wave begins to break, launch yourself and the board forward. It’s customary to accompany this action with a loud yell!"

Actually, that is the point where I would go under the water and, hopefully (!), come up coughing and spluttering.

I am convinced this woman is mad. Why doesn't she stick to riding her bike?

Geraldine, keep away from sewing machines. No good ever came of them. #memoriesofgathersdartsandbreakingneedles hmm

j08 Thu 27-Jun-13 18:53:11

And what is that "tension" thing all about? confused And has anybody really successfully put a zip in a frock? hmm

And don't start me on getting hems straight.

j08 Thu 27-Jun-13 18:55:44

"It's never too late."

Oh yes it effing well is! hmm I don't intend taking active steps towards drowning now!

nanaej Thu 27-Jun-13 19:44:40

I would love to learn to surf but I might be mistaken for for a blubbery seal if I donned a wet suit...

mollie Thu 27-Jun-13 20:08:32

I seem to be doing more giving up stuff than starting new things! I must have got it wrong confused

Grannylin Thu 27-Jun-13 20:31:45

I love swimming in the sea in down here but I haven't been in this year yet...it's still only 12 deg. but if it nudges up to 13 deg. next week I shall jump in...wet suits are for wimps!

DD2 went out in a boat to swim with dolphins when she was in NZ. They reached an appropriate spot and she (under 5' with bug boobs) was handed a giant, man-sized wet suit. They had nothing smaller on board. She slipped into it easily enough and with several turnups on the arms and legs was able to waddle to the side of the boat and slip backwards into the water. Now DD2 is an excellent swimmer, but the suit inflated itself around her, such that she was stuck on her back with a giant beer belly and inflated arms that kept rising skywards and could not be forced into the water.

Superhuman effort enabled her to turn over but she just turned onto her back again like a self-righting life raft. Unbeknown to her a whole pod? of dolphins arrived to join in the fun. She did not see them as all she could see was the sky. Fortunately (or not) her DP had elected to stay on board and film this 'once in a lifetime experience' so there is a record of the floating blimp with the dolphins all around and sorry but No, it has not been posted on YouTube nor sent to 'You've been framed'. A member of the crew had to stop laughing for long enough to dive in, push her back to the boat and deflate her by pulling down the zip so that she could clamber back on board. They had the decency to refund her fee for the trip, saying that it was their fault for not bringing a small sized suit and that they hadn't enjoyed themselves so much in years.

Sorry that should be BIG boobs, not bug boobs - think Dolly Parton.
