Am currently reading An English Affair: Sex, Class and Power in the Age of Profumo by Richard Davenport-Hines. It is brilliantly written, totally evocative of the time and explores the Profumo affair in the context of the attitudes and mores of the late fifties and early sixties.
I had almost forgotten the true horror of the prevalent and institutionalised sexism, racism and homophobia that was around. It also reminds me that sections of the press were as hypocritical, cynical and horrible then as they are now.
Has anyone else read it?
