Re the thread how do you choose your next book got me thinking are there any modern authors that have died and you really miss reading if their books ,mine is Maeve Binchy nearest author I have found similar style to her
is Rosin Meany but if anyone’s got any other suggestion I would love to hear

I really miss Ruth Rendell/Barbara Vine and Margaret Forster. Those two spring to mind but I'm sure there are others. I did love Maeve Binchy's earlier books, but not so much her later ones, nevertheless was very sorry when her death was announced.

Not sure how modern we are supposed to be but I miss Susan Howatch and Agatha Christie. Agree with R Rendell too.

Terry Pratchet and Iain Banks are also authors who have died relatively recently and were not particularly old. Anita Shreve died last year and I like her books.

.....and Helen Dunmore, I only discovered her recently and then she died.

For many years I looked forward to receiving the new Terry Pratchett novel for Christmas. I miss looking forward to the doings of the witches and Sir Samuel Vines, the Wizards in Unseen University.
Alas, no more.

Titles of some books that are unforgettable for me:
"The Book thief"
"The Reader"
"The Kite-runner"
"The girl on the train" is entertaining, and of course Lee Childs 'Jack Reacher' series (one or two are really gruesome though)
I loved Susan Howatch's 'Church of England' series: they must be read in order , starting with "Glittering Images", Glamorous powers" (not sure which come first) but there are hours of absorbing reading, look at "Scandalous Risks" if you think they sound dull!

Sara65 Sat 20-Apr-19 10:46:28

Oh yes, mustn’t forget Iris Murdoch!

SillyNanny321 Sat 20-Apr-19 10:58:30

Some of my favourites sadly no longer with us are the great Rosamunde Pilcher, who died recently, R.D.Wingfield, for his Frost stories, Elvi Rhodes for her historical novels and Jane Bolitho, whose Cornwall mysteries I've only just discovered.
