Please help me find a book!

I hope someone can put me out of my misery! Trying to get the title and author if a book I read possibly 30 to 40 years ago. It features a couple who move to an isolated house, and a strange man lives nearby. The river floods and I think the man saves the wife. Not much to go on, sorry. But it sticks in my memory as a haunting tale. Hope you can help……

Is the book, "The Virgin and the Gipsy" DH Lawrence? If you look the book up on Wikipedia, it gives the plot which features a flood.

I think it's a book by Barbara Erskine but I can't remember the name.

Agree with notgran sounds like The virgin and the Gypsy by DJ Lawrence. I was a DH Lawrence nut in my early 20's and read everything he wrote.
