Guilty Pleasures

Greenmossgiel, I must admit to not having heard of the Wellesley Colliery Band, hubby was at the Albert Hall before we met, which was at the end of 1962, playing with the Heywood Old Prize Band, which disbanded around 1970, then he got to the National finals again with the Cheetham Hill Band in 1972, but their section didn`t get to play at the same place as the elite, they were in Chelsea Town Hall. He was a soprano cornet player, but later on went on to second cornet. Ohhhh, those were the days!

numberplease, old Tammy was in the Wellesley Colliery Band. I think it was in 1966 that they won the competition at the Albert Hall. I also remember him playing the cornet to my mother-in-law. He played 'Tammy' to her (Debbie Reynolds?) "Tammy, Tammy, Tammy's in love". Aah!

I am a huge Queen fan but I love Josh Groban, his voice is wonderful
and I also like the Englebert Humperdink Eurovision song but I am not letting anyone on to that dark secret of mine

We've been to many of their concerts and they are definitely better live than even the best of their recordings. They are always much in demand but are not in the North much this year, sadly. The problem for a lot of brass bands these days is they struggle to get sponsorship (and new members) and then they go under, which is a shame - it's part of our heritage.
On the more popular side, I am also a big Fleetwood Mac fan, and loved Stevie Nix's stuff when she went solo.

Artygran, I love Grimethorpe to bits, have several of their records, but have never managed to see them in the flesh.
Greenmossgiel, which band was it that your FIL played with? My hubby used to be a bandsman, and he`s played in the Nationals at the Albert Hall as well, but not in the top section, sadly.
I`m also a great Elvis and Cliff fan, and also love most Country and Western music, and I used to absolutely ADORE Harry Secombe, as comedian and singer, saw him once in Rochdale, many years ago, seemed a lovely man.

Glad I'm not the only one who loves brass bands. I was dead chuffed one MayDay in Brisbane when the Mayday march band played all the music from Brassed Off.

I also like Russian male voice choirs, Hungarian gypsy music, and all the 60s pop music.

Other guilty pleasures include sneaking some of my husband's birthday rum into my coffee with cream. He says it is a wicked waste of rum but I beg to differ.

And finally, writing daft rhymes.

Going to see The Waterboys tomorrow; not sure if I like him/them but they might not play here again and Mike Scott supposedly does a very good show. I love anything with fiddles [Levellers being my all time favourite, and Levelling the Land being my all time car sinagalong album]. And a tribute to Sandy Denny on Sunday; hoping that Swarbrick will be playing. I agree it must be wonderful to play a musical instrument or sing; it gives so much joy to people.

I'm an avid Elbow fan - went to see them twice last year- at the O2 and in a small venue in Paris. The only good thing about the Olympics this year for me will be the music - Elbow have written the 2012 Olympics anthem. I have their music on in my car - very loud - and I get some funny looks when I pull up in the supermarket carpark!

Quite diverse with music but I hate Jazz!. I really like Adelle and all things Tamla Motown.

Tone deaf and can't play a thing. I t must be wonderful to play an instrument or have a good singing voice, very few people can sing don't you think.

Green & number I love brass bands too! Big fan of Black Dyke, Rolls Royce Coventry and, of course, the big one, Grimethorpe! I also, like others, love the Chieftains - they are in concert here in June, the week we are on holiday ! I could spit!

I went with my daughter to see the New Kids on the Block and the Backstreet Boys when they were here in April. Saw the New Kids first over 20 years ago. Donnie Walhberg was my guilty pleasure then. Still does it for me now.

A sneaking liking for Country and Western music!

Love brass bands, number! My old father-in-law played in and conducted the brass band attached to the colliery in which he was a miner. Beautiful sound! The collieries all had their own bands in those days, and his won the competition at the Albert Hall!

Just a turn of phrase, absent - I suppose it means we realise that some of them are considered by others (and possibly even ourselves!) as a bit....naff/cheesy/awful!

Why should you feel guilty about such innocent pleasures?

Football and Michael Bolton did not rate him at all until DH suggested going to see him as there were tickets left at our local arena, but I had to go down that afternoon and collect the tickets before that evening's performance and went into the arena to the cash office and he was rehearsing with all the auditorium doors were open and he was belting out Nessan Dorma.... oh I was hooked he was singing just for me

Barry Manilow for me, too, although I wouldn't go to see him in concert now, his voice isn't what it was and he's looking a bit odd these days. I loved him in the 80s though - so much energy and personality! OH is very sarky about my DVDs....

You know I haven't checked out any Dubliners music for year, always relating them to that daft song they had out many years ago. In my youth I lived with aguy whose sister had lived with one of them and I'm sure we had a guitar or a mandolin that had belonged to one of them. I'll utube them now and see what sort of stuff they're playing these days. I went to see Blowzabella the other week; thought they'd split up a long time ago and never thought I'd get to see them play live. the music is very marmite,but worth checking out if you like folk music.
