Things my parents said ...

Yes, a.n.other shameless attempt to get some chatter started this morning ... Some things my parents said have definitely stayed with me and (mostly) made some sense to me over the years. Here are a few I have remembered:-

On losing weight:
"Breakfast like a king, dine like a prince, supper like a pauper."

On household cleanliness:
'Everyone has to eat a peck of dirt before they die.'

And on social relations:
"If that person is being high and mighty with you, just imagine them sitting on the toilet ... it's a great leveller."

What words of wisdom - or silliness - have stayed with you over the years?

"I suppose if your friends jumped off a cliff, you'd want to do it too!"

'You have to suffer to be beautiful' from my mother.

lemongrove Tue 12-Sep-17 09:08:11

?Missadventure oh yes, and have used that expression on my own DC too!

The road to hell is paved with good intentions! That was a favourite of my Mother.

My mum used to say "I don't know why you're crying, I'm the one who should cry!" that always horrified me, that I was so awful that I almost made my mum break down!

Procrastination is the thief of time, that was another favourite, although I must add that these sort of things were always said with a 'twinkle' and not a strict expression.?

"If the wind changes, your face will stick like that!" - when I was in a mood.

lemongrove Tue 12-Sep-17 09:14:49

I still believe that Imperfect ! grin

"Sitting on that cold doorstep will give you piles". If it did, it waited 40 years! grin

Patience is a virtue!
Not one of mine though! ?

"Count your blessings."
I've had to, many times, and I thank my mum for this one.

Imperfect27 Tue 12-Sep-17 09:20:35

lemongrove , there could be some truth in it.

MissA I think I may be a long lost family member of yours.

We weren't allowed to run around straight after dinner, because we had to wait until our food "fell off the shelf"

Luckygirl Tue 12-Sep-17 09:26:27

"Waste no, want not"- from my Dad - it did become a bit tedious over time!

Luckygirl Tue 12-Sep-17 09:26:41

not

Gagagran Tue 12-Sep-17 09:32:16

"Self-praise is no recommendation" - said by Mum to any sign of boasting.

gillybob Tue 12-Sep-17 09:37:27

My dads famous lines when we were having fun ( and perhaps getting carried away)

" cut it out, a joke's a joke but you've gone too far"

Miserable git .

"Children in Africa would be glad of that!" -when we were being fussy over food. My parents were very strict and we had to have our clear plate before we were allowed to depart from the table. If dad was out, we would sometimes backchat my mother by grumbling "Well, put it in an envelope and send it to them!" We knew we wouldn't get a backhand from her - but we did still eat it all!

MissAdventure Tue 12-Sep-17 09:39:11

"I don't care who started it, I'm finishing it!"

MissAdventure Tue 12-Sep-17 09:41:46

"Its my door, and if anyone is going to slam it, it'll be me!"
Said by mum when we were trying to flounce out of the room.

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Tue 12-Sep-17 09:45:12

Imperfect27 That was a favourite in our house too!

MissAdventure Tue 12-Sep-17 09:48:08

We used to hear about the children in Africa too.

Pride feels no pain -when she was raking a brush through my tangled hair (and putting it in rags for ringlets when I was little-too little to understand what it meant!)

It's six of one and half a dozen of the other.-or
I don't care who started it but I'l finish it-both when my brother and I were fighting.
