Using whose funds ?

Haven't used a bus in Guildford since the days when there were 2 bus stations either side of the river. I mainly used the Onslow Street one but used to meet friends under the clock in the other. As for the railway station, has it changed much since I went with my aunt to see the steam trains? It was always exciting to use the 'passometer' bridge. Tunsgate hasn't been the same since they closed the cinema!

I should think that new bus and rail stations are well overdue for Guildford. Shall have to keep an eye on progress and arrange a visit to see what's been done.

I now live in a small village. The only changes are the building of 5 and 6 bedroom houses on very small plots. Can't underestand why anyone would want a big house in the country with virtually no garden. Spoils what was a nice little moorland village, so maybe we should have invested better for our future.

They can’t see past their nose ends.

I suggest they reduce the crime and cannabis farms that are being found on a regular basis. Latest being in Speke and the value of the haul is half a million.

I was in central Bristol several months ago and they had lots of activity going on including new roadworks. They have great bus services and there's a vibrant feel to the place.

The traffic in Bristol is terrible and the pollution is extremely high. I hope they are trying to tackle that - perhaps more park and rides for larger towns and cities would be a good idea.

On the positive side this town is a relatively safe place to live as we don’t have much in the way of serious crime.

These ideas have a habit of being pie in the sky. Look what happened to Carillion and the building of the new Liverpool hospital-----millions spent, for what ? An empty shell of a building left half finished and no more funds left to finish the job.

It's all very well reading about how people are going to break eggs with a big stick, but seeing these projects come into fruition is another story.
All Joe Anderson is concerned about is building dozens of council houses.

I'm damn glad I don't live in Liverpool. My brother can't wait to get out and he's in a " decent " area. 2019 isn't the 50's/60's Liverpool.

I expect if a Labour government were doing these things you mention, Gabriella, then some people on this site may be a bit more impressed but, in general, you won't get them to be positive about anything the 'nasty' Tories do. Sadly, that's very often the socialist mentality.

What's a 'knowledge quarter'?

Nothing is being done in our area of Scotland. Funds are going to Edinburgh and Glasgow and the rest of Scotland can go hang, it seems.

Why does everything now have to be in a "quarter"? It's supposed to sound all buzzy and trendy but it really grates on me. why isn't there a Grumpy Old Woman smiley?

The (so called) 'knowledge quarter', pretentious as it sounds, is the area where science, innovation and learning projects are based. There is also a 'fabric' quarter.

Where were you staying in Bristol? The public transport system is awful - expensive and unreliable, unless you are using the couple of metro buses - which have their own lanes for part of their journeys. The rest of the service is laughable.

The constant roadworks are a nightmare - did you try travelling from Temple Meads into Broadmead?

We measure how well the City of London is doing by the amount of “active cranes” and there are an awful lot at the moment. New building and regeneration projects.

Yes, there is a lot going on everywhere; regeneration projects and many roadworks.
It will all be better in the future, but, of course, in the meantime we have to put up with the inconvenience.

Some money has presumably come from the EU via the British taxpayer of course, other directly from the Government.

What an interesting take on Bristol.
The buses are awful and have always been so. The roadworks have been going on for years, in fact they stopped for a while.
The centre is in at least it's 4th incarnation in my lifetime and still doesn't work.
I'm so happy to have escaped from there after 62 years.

Our city (Birmingham) has undergone quite a transformation over the last few years. Anyone who hasn't visited for a while wouldn't recognise it. The city centre canals have been opened up and there are lots of bars and restaurants, pretty flower displays. There are several skyscrapers going up which I assume are student accommodation. They are closing car parks and intend to bring in a congestion type charge. Fortunately the public transport system is OK.

Regeneration?!! My friend lives in an area of Liverpool which has had a lot of work completed locally - she's still worried about going on holiday and leaving her house empty. Still hates walking around the area and is desperate to move. She had 2 youths attempting to kick her door in last year ( 20 mins before police arrived!). I love the city....it was my home for many years but I think the focus needs to be on crime and the litany of anti social behaviour.

They regenerated our little market town a few years ago
This meant that they removed all the short term parking in the middle of the town, replaced it with ‘art’, a couple of benches and plenty of different ground levels.
This means we all have to negotiate the uneven cobbled streets and remember to pick our feet up when we get to a different area. Lots of AoverTits!
The Chamber of Trade fought this with everything they had but the Town council loved it all. I think it won some sort of award.
Just about killed the trade though. Out of town businesses started banking on the next town where they could park next to the bank. Locals stopped popping in for a paper or a loaf of bread and when to the big supermarket instead.

I think if you are visiting a big city for a break, stay in a nice hotel near the attractions, you will see the best bits - but if you live there and have to travel to school, to work, endure the daily traffic, the pollution it is quite a different matter.
