I cannot stand "fur babies" - they are pets!!!

Ghastly, I agree! I find both equally cringeworthy.
And much as I love Hattie, I am not overfond of “fur babies”either!

Babe, little man, princess, snuck (whatever that means) hubster, I could go on and on.

I cringe when anyone refers to their child as a little prince or princess.

And whence came sleepover? They're staying the night.

Just not my style, and although I do sometimes refer to my children as “the kids” somehow “grandkids” sticks in my throat!

Suppose you were 60 years old and had owned a fur baby for 10 years ?

I think grandbaby, sleepover and playdates are words that are use more in USA and have migrated to this side to the atlantic - I don't like these terms either. However, "hubby" is a term I've heard for a long time though I don't use, maybe more common in some places.

Those all grate on me as well along with "the wife" nobody ever says "the husband"

I hate it when you ask someone how they are and they say they're 'Good'. Do they mean well-behaved?

I don't like them, either, though some I do now use, such as play date, as it is quite a handy term.
Hubby makes me cringe! I'd give my dh a long, hard stare if he ever called me 'wifey'.

My mum would never allow the term 'kids' to be used as 'kids are baby goats'. I admit I do refer to my grown-up children as kids as in 'which of the kids will be here for lunch?' Calling them children when they've their own families seems a bit odd!

A friend always types 'hun' in texts, It feels wrong to type the same in reply but I don't know what else to put.

Language evolves. I doubt anyone says 'I prithee thee' these days, or 'betimes' but these were common parlance once.

Words fall out of use, new words are introduced. Our language doesn't conveniently stand still to reflect the style of speech that we feel is 'right'. There is no eternal 'right', only a set of rules that apply at any given time. It's a living language, ever evolving.

Kitty, I'm in full agreement about the words you mention in the thread title. May I add my own per hate? 'Kiddies'.

Jane10, 'gotten is a now redundant past participle of 'get' and is still in use in 'forgotten', 'begotten'' and 'misbegotten'.

'Gotten' crossed the Atlantic and survived while it died out here.

I dislike - hubby, grandbabies and especially fur babies. Aaaargh

I like sleepover, my own children now mid 30’s enjoyed sleepovers. Their 3 and 4 year olds now ask if they can have a sleepover at my house- yes they can ?

Sleepover seems alright ( to me)
Not keen on hubby, furbaby or grandbaby though.
