These words seem to have risen in popularity lately.

They are not words I would ever use and I wonder what brings words to the fore.

There must be loads of others that I haven't thought of.

I cannot stand "fur babies" - they are pets!!!

MawBroonsback Wed 24-Jul-19 10:59:20

Ghastly, I agree! I find both equally cringeworthy.
And much as I love Hattie, I am not overfond of “fur babies”either!

Grannybags Wed 24-Jul-19 11:11:03

Oh no I can't stand any of those. Also "playdates"

Oldandverygrey Wed 24-Jul-19 11:15:28

Babe, little man, princess, snuck (whatever that means) hubster, I could go on and on.

Scribbles Wed 24-Jul-19 11:17:35

I cringe when anyone refers to their child as a little prince or princess.

And whence came sleepover? They're staying the night.

grannyqueenie Wed 24-Jul-19 11:20:33

Just not my style, and although I do sometimes refer to my children as “the kids” somehow “grandkids” sticks in my throat!

Beechnut Wed 24-Jul-19 11:21:45

Suppose you were 60 years old and had owned a fur baby for 10 years ?

Farmor15 Wed 24-Jul-19 12:13:26

I think grandbaby, sleepover and playdates are words that are use more in USA and have migrated to this side to the atlantic - I don't like these terms either. However, "hubby" is a term I've heard for a long time though I don't use, maybe more common in some places.

sodapop Wed 24-Jul-19 12:48:23

Those all grate on me as well along with "the wife" nobody ever says "the husband"

Calendargirl Wed 24-Jul-19 12:52:45

Hun.
Bless.
Dude.

arosebyanyothername Wed 24-Jul-19 12:53:53

Holibobs ?

Septimia Wed 24-Jul-19 12:55:23

I hate it when you ask someone how they are and they say they're 'Good'. Do they mean well-behaved?

SueDonim Wed 24-Jul-19 13:00:00

I don't like them, either, though some I do now use, such as play date, as it is quite a handy term. blush
Hubby makes me cringe! I'd give my dh a long, hard stare if he ever called me 'wifey'. grin

My mum would never allow the term 'kids' to be used as 'kids are baby goats'. I admit I do refer to my grown-up children as kids as in 'which of the kids will be here for lunch?' Calling them children when they've their own families seems a bit odd!

ninathenana Wed 24-Jul-19 13:00:15

I confess to having said hubby.
A friend always types 'hun' in texts, It feels wrong to type the same in reply but I don't know what else to put.

fizzers Wed 24-Jul-19 13:02:45

oh hun makes me cringe, be it on Facebook posts, texts , emails etc, I never use it

ginny Wed 24-Jul-19 13:26:17

Hubby, soul mate Yeuk
Other half... I am a full person in my own right thank you.

ginny Wed 24-Jul-19 13:27:24

He / she completes me.

Oh please !

Jane10 Wed 24-Jul-19 14:09:44

I can't bear to read 'gotten'.
Also when did holidays become 'vacas'? Ghastly

NanaandGrampy Wed 24-Jul-19 14:16:19

Crikey - Ill tell The Queen of the Universe Scribbles LOL

A lot of these words are the current vernacular - you don't have to use them after all :-)

I'm sure there are a lot of words from thirty years ago that are equally ghastly !

Bathsheba Wed 24-Jul-19 14:24:38

Language evolves. I doubt anyone says 'I prithee thee' these days, or 'betimes' but these were common parlance once.

Words fall out of use, new words are introduced. Our language doesn't conveniently stand still to reflect the style of speech that we feel is 'right'. There is no eternal 'right', only a set of rules that apply at any given time. It's a living language, ever evolving.

annodomini Wed 24-Jul-19 15:14:28

Kitty, I'm in full agreement about the words you mention in the thread title. May I add my own per hate? 'Kiddies'.

Jane10, 'gotten is a now redundant past participle of 'get' and is still in use in 'forgotten', 'begotten'' and 'misbegotten'.

'Gotten' crossed the Atlantic and survived while it died out here.

Iam64 Wed 24-Jul-19 15:30:45

I dislike - hubby, grandbabies and especially fur babies. Aaaargh

I like sleepover, my own children now mid 30’s enjoyed sleepovers. Their 3 and 4 year olds now ask if they can have a sleepover at my house- yes they can ?

lemongrove Wed 24-Jul-19 15:43:35

Sleepover seems alright ( to me)
Not keen on hubby, furbaby or grandbaby though.
Hun is just awful (Attilla the Hun?) grin

Alexa Wed 24-Jul-19 15:48:26

hubby is non U.
