I think what the people in the article were saying is that they have decided not to be pressurised by friends and relatives into coupledom. Judging by some of the sad stories on GN that seems like a very good idea.

As partner means one of two people who are in a relationship or one of a pair eg for sporting activities, self-partnering is a contradiction and meaningless.
