Following on from our thread about the gems of good advice you've been offered, we thought we should explore the flip side too.

Trying to decide my own. So many. Will return!

Be careful!!!

...after you already tripped/bumped into something/fell over

This one does make me chuckle though on occasion! ( as long as it’s not me having the accident of course ) ?

Oopsadaisy3 Wed 11-Mar-20 10:41:16

‘It won’t matter’ closely followed by ‘no-one will notice’

And a friend was told “ once you’ve married him, he’ll change”

He didn’t.

My mother told me it was a waste of time going to university as a mature student. I’m so glad I didn’t listen as I went on to have a fulfilling career that I wouldn’t have had without my degree.

An “expert” once told me I needed to put a pipe from my (flooded) garden to the nearest drain....as this would have involved getting water to run uphill, I didn’t take his advice! confused

The worst piece of advice was from my mother, who told me to do hairdressing as "you make loads of money" no you don't! I hated it, I should of listened to myself and become a Librarian!

He's a nice man........no, he was a shite!!

SueLindsey Wed 11-Mar-20 12:13:43

My parents told me to go to the Court School of Dancing to learn the waltz and foxtrot as it would "come in useful in later
life". I'm 68 and it hasn't yet!!

grandMattie Wed 11-Mar-20 12:14:06

Don't go into teaching, it's too tiring. I shall regret it to my dying day!!! I would have been a fabulous teacher.

cookiemonster66 Wed 11-Mar-20 12:32:03

my mum always said " men - they are only after ONE thing!" she NEVER told me what is was , even to this day???

Madbird Wed 11-Mar-20 12:34:50

From my mother....Women aren’t meant to enjoy sex. Just let him get on with it....?

redsue Wed 11-Mar-20 12:40:55

Start smoking it will make boys like you more when i was 15 which was 48 years ago

Madmaggie Wed 11-Mar-20 12:42:00

Leave school at 15, it's not important for girls to be educated! This from my mother who in later life trained to be a teacher!!!

Madmaggie Wed 11-Mar-20 12:44:35

"Trust me - it's a rock solid investment" (he later served 4 years for fraud and deception)

Duvetdiva Wed 11-Mar-20 12:50:07

SueLindsey I also went to the Court School of Dancing and met my husband of 52 years there. Not all bad advice. ????

grannyactivist Wed 11-Mar-20 12:55:18

Said before my marriage to a man ten years my junior:

Don't marry him; it'll be fine when you're in your thirties and forties, but you'll grow apart when you're in your fifties and he's still only in his forties.

I didn't heed the advice and we've been extremely happily married for thirty three years. smile

By several people...to get rid of my pregnancy as I was in the early stages and then found out my son was autistic. We went ahead and although it was tough she brought us so much joy within a very difficult situation.

Maggiemaybe Wed 11-Mar-20 13:19:37

Hmm. It could have been my mother saying I should wear my glasses instead of the contact lenses for my wedding, because I "looked more like me" apparently with them on.

Wrong. I looked more like Deidre Barlow in those massive bins, and thank goodness I changed to the lenses after the ceremony and at least got a few decent photos of the day!

To sell some shares I'd inherited. I got £1000. That may sound good, but within months they had rocketed and a year later they were worth 8x what I sold them for.

dkdd Wed 11-Mar-20 13:56:13

"Everything happens for a reason" NO. IT. DOESN'T. It's a cop out.

libra10 Wed 11-Mar-20 14:07:07

When The Halifax demutualised, we were advised to keep the shares and not sell, as they were so solid like 'keeping the family silver'.

We did as advised, and most of us will remember the economic crash of 2008, and our shares were drastically reduced, making them almost worthless.

We lost quite a lot of money.

Tillymint21 Wed 11-Mar-20 14:22:23

“Well I would, if I were you”.

(But you’re not!)

GreenGran78 Wed 11-Mar-20 15:12:18

In the days when we did what are parents told us to. I wanted to join the WRAF (Women’s Royal Air Force) I was persuaded (told) to leave school at 16 and get a ‘nice, safe office job.’
I always regretted not going to university or learning a trade in the WRAF,
.

“It’s Not For You”

From my mother who hated my career choice but I went ahead anyway and loved every minute.
