Well, whaddya think?

I thought he came across very well. No long words. No faffing. Plain and simple.

Ladyleftfieldlover Sun 10-May-20 19:52:46

268 have died across all situations.

notanan2 Sun 10-May-20 19:54:13

HOW was it "not clear"

There was a graph with pictures grin

It couldnt possibly have been clearer

trisher Sun 10-May-20 19:58:01

It only applies to England anyway. The others- Wales Scotland N.Ireland have said they are sticking to stay home. Quite what happens if you live in one and work in another I don't know.

westendgirl Sun 10-May-20 19:58:54

Probably less waffle because it was recorded.
I'm not quite sure what he meant and think he was edging some workers back into work without really coming out and saying so. I think it would have been better to have given the full statement which I believe is coming out through the week . I feel sorry for those wondering should I go in or not .

Nannatwiglet Sun 10-May-20 19:59:15

Far too early for restrictions to be lifted...People will interpret what BoJo has said in their own way....More details needed...I predict a spike in deaths and illness...

Toddy Sun 10-May-20 19:59:26

I'm wondering about childcare provided usually by us grandparents once years 1 , 6 and reception go back in June. My daughter teaches year one, her middle son will also go back as hes in yr.one (not at her school), but that leaves the toddler and seven year old needing minding. She's a single parent so relies on us for childcare usually. Will anyone else have this dilemma?

ineedamum Sun 10-May-20 20:01:35

Yes, even if grandparents don't mind children- nurseries and schools are open to key workers only. So people who have to work, are they now key workers?

Katyj Sun 10-May-20 20:02:09

Well I can go back to work tomorrow but I can only go out once so how do I get home ?

Greeneyedgirl Sun 10-May-20 20:03:17

So if you cannot work from home you should go back to work, but not on public transport but by bike or on foot preferably, and next week.

OK. Is the onus on the employers or employees? Is there legislation in place to ensure workplace is safe?

Does this mean that if it is judged by an employee not safe for them to return does their furlough come to an end with no pay I wonder?

vampirequeen Sun 10-May-20 20:03:55

I don't like BJ but I think he was as clear as he could be under the circumstances and I liked the way he kept stressing that the planned changes were subject to how the R number was affected. I feel better being told what they hope will happen whilst being aware that it may be delayed if the R number rises. It's better than silence and the sense of never ending lockdown.

That said the cynic in me can't help thinking that there's more to this than meets the eye. Workers will be returning to the factories etc. and being in close proximity to potential carriers. Same goes for if they move to the next stage and open the shops. How can they return to work tomorrow? Will the managers have got all the safety procedures in place? Surely they need time to inform the workers if it's safe to return. Is this a response to the pressure from Tory donors who want their businesses back in production?

notanan2 Sun 10-May-20 20:04:37

Toddy keyworker creches have remained open and arent about to close so the toddler can be enrolled if they werent previously.

Keyworker childcare provision isnt going anywhere. With only 3 years open the majority of staff can stay on the school age creche rota

vampirequeen Sun 10-May-20 20:06:40

I don't think the workers will have any choice but to return even if they don't feel save because the DWP won't pay benefits if they have a job and if they resign or get sacked the DWP will say they're deliberately jobless and not consider a claim from them for at least six weeks.

Minigrandma Sun 10-May-20 20:09:36

In my opinion he has just given the Covid idiots, a green light to be more idiotic.

People can go back to work tomorrow but not use public transport.

Ok that’s fine so Fred works 30 miles from home, (can’t work from home) uses the train to go to work and his mother in law who is on the vulnerable list looks after his children while he is at work.

So he has to walk or cycle to work he doesn’t own a car by the way, and find child care for his children. Utterly ridiculous.

Not to mention the more exercise we can do. Sitting on park benches and driving to places.

I thought he was going to let us see a few more people as well no mention of that at all.

Davidhs Sun 10-May-20 20:10:57

No waffle, he was reading off a teleprompter, message, carry on social distancing chapter and verse tomorrow, exactly what we can and can’t do.
Not much difference other than more distance can be travelled in family groups, no mention yet of garden centers.

notanan2 Sun 10-May-20 20:15:41

most people who cant work from home but work in areas where you arent in close physical contact and can social distance work were already still at work

Its no big sudden change for most employers/employees

Grannynannywanny Sun 10-May-20 20:15:43

We can drive to other places and socialise with family only, but still keeping social distancing.

Gabriella my phone rang while he was talking and disturbed my concentration ( it doesn’t take much)

When you posted that did you mean we can drive to other places and socialise with family who are not part of our household as long as we maintain the 2m distance?

Or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

Summerlove Sun 10-May-20 20:17:14

We can drive to other places and socialise with family only, but still keeping social distancing.

What’s the difference between visiting with family and visiting with friends? I really don’t see one

ginny Sun 10-May-20 20:20:41

Wishful thinking Granny Nannywanny.

Katy’s he said we can go out more than once.

paddyanne Sun 10-May-20 20:22:27

Family from your own household ?

Katyj Sun 10-May-20 20:24:39

We can only go out more from Wednesday.

GabriellaG54 Sun 10-May-20 20:27:12

Daddima
What would he have to have done to make you believe him? Not contacted anyone? Would that, in your mind, be believable?
What you choose to believe is not necessarily what is fact.
All 3 of the other member countries can rebut his claims and you can prove your belief by contacting them to ask if they were consulted, or not.

Saetana Sun 10-May-20 20:31:03

We can now drive to other places for exercise etc but only with members of our own household still. Being allowed out for unlimited exercise (from Wednesday) is the only real change announced. The workers he is talking about were in the group of businesses (such as construction) that were allowed to continue work anyway - provided they could maintain safe social distancing. There are no more shops or leisure/hospitality businesses allowed to be open than was the case this week at the moment.

I would have thought every employer would have been using the downtime to work out how they could safely re-open their businesses when allowed, whilst maintaining social distancing to keep staff (and customers where applicable) safe. Take B&Q as an example - they were never mandated to close their stores but did so until they could put a plan in place for safe social distancing for their staff and customers.

The media have been incredibly irresponsibly this week, and throughout the entire pandemic come to that, giving people the false impression that lockdown was going to be dramatically eased next week. Boris is being cautious, as he should be, and did point out that lockdown could be tightened as well as loosened if the number of infections and deaths start rising again.

GabriellaG54 Sun 10-May-20 20:31:30

Sumnerlove
If you can't see the difference...?

Your family is made up of a finite number.
Your friends have friends other than you and those other friends also have friends...do you see where I'm going with this...?

Phew! Some people are hard work.

MawB Sun 10-May-20 20:34:13

We can drive to other places and socialise with family only, but still keeping social distancing

I’m afraid I didn’t hear that as socialise but exercise, so a round of golf (flag staying in the hole) or maybe even tennis singles if you have your own court, or a bike ride or run.
But I did not get the impression that any indoor visiting was mentioned.
Did I miss something?

Minigrandma Sun 10-May-20 20:35:43

My daughter who works in the beauty industry, has had up to now since the PMs statement 6 messages asking for appointments next week, because all they heard was people who can’t work from home can go back to work tomorrow. ?
