What's wrong with 'pissing off the fairies'?

My GS1 (10) is building a fairy grotto in the garden. It's going to be quite elaborate with solar-powered fairy lights and general fairy bling. Luckily it's at the far end in a secluded corner and he also wants to encourage local wildlife, hedgehogs, squirrels, etc to use it.

He's seen a sign on Amazon saying 'Don't piss off the fairies!' which I thought was quite amusing but his dad has put a veto on buying that. I'd be quite happy for him to have it but I understand I mustn't go against my lovely SiL.

But I can't help feeling there's nothing wrong with this sign.

Is it me? hmm

I wouldn't think its a suitable phrase for a child so well done to your son in law for taking a stand.
It was quite funny though, does that make me hypocritical?

No problem with that I have two grandsons same age ( Teens ) one happily wears pink built like a brick s h other wouldn't even carry a surf board that had pink on it when we went to the beach haha

Aaaah but only "real men wear pink" Bluebelle wink

Jalima1108 Wed 19-Jul-17 17:31:43

Yes, I thought the meaning was 'tossing something away' and have said it a few times blush
DH explained it to me.

I prefer my interpretation of it.

Jalima grin

Notme Wed 19-Jul-17 18:28:36

(Because everyone should believe in fairies)

I think that norose is right when she says that it doesn't go with the ambience of having a lovely fairy grotto Anya, so yes, your SIL is right.?

Anya Wed 19-Jul-17 19:02:30

Well I am surprised! At least two GNetters see the funny side of it ????

gillybob Wed 19-Jul-17 19:06:03

I see the funny side of Jalima saying "she couldn't give a toss" Anya does that count? I really do have a SOH.

Imperfect27 Wed 19-Jul-17 19:15:59

Anya I see the funny side of it too, but - and maybe this is my own issue - I just feel it is a bit coarse for a child - and where / how then do you set the boundary on other 'bad' language? Maybe that's why the dad said 'No'.

Saying a naughty word or joke now and again is one thing. It's quite different to have it on a sign in the garden.

PamelaJ1 Wed 19-Jul-17 21:32:33

What words do people use now when they are really really cross when all the 'expressive' words are now in common use? Oh dearie me doesn't quite have the same impact.
I agree with most of the posters about the sign. I don't mind it for adults but not for children and its appeal may fade quickly.

Baggs Wed 19-Jul-17 21:54:10

I didn't think adults 'did' fairies.

Jalima1108 Wed 19-Jul-17 22:12:19

Baggs shock
you know that one dies every time you say that .....

Baggs Wed 19-Jul-17 22:26:19

grin

"^what words do people use now when they are really really cross when all the expressive words are now in common use^"

Personally, I like fuckity fuck, but then, as already admitted up thread, I have a potty mouth. blush

merlotgran Wed 19-Jul-17 23:17:15

Yep! Fuckity Fuckles is my choice when I step in the dog's water bowl.

Chewbacca Wed 19-Jul-17 23:18:35

grin oh thanks merlot, I don't feel as bad now!

harrigran Wed 19-Jul-17 23:21:52

That sign would not be allowed in my garden and I have difficulty in believing a 10 year old boy would be into fairies, I can imagine the comments from his classmates if they found out.

Chewbacca Wed 19-Jul-17 23:28:28

Maybe OPs grandson's school friends are more enlightened harrigran. Maybe they see him for what he is: a nice kid; an interesting person; an individual who isn't afraid to be himself or be shackled to what "society expects from a 10 year old boy". is it any wonder that there are bullies in schools

norose4 Wed 19-Jul-17 23:45:28

My favourite word rhymes with rollocks Chewbacca, rolls off the tongue so easily ?
