I have just discovered frozen onions

and mushrooms, shallots, peppers and all sorts of other things.

According to DD3 'most people' use them.

They seem like cheating to me but I am making a vast chili and the weekend and thought I'd try them out.

Anyone else use them? I am just behind the times?

I use frozen onions all the time as my eyes just cannot cope with fresh ones! They are fab.

Ilovecheese Thu 20-Sep-18 16:11:05

I use tinned chopped onions, they are already cooked. My eyes wont take fresh onions any more either.

M0nica Thu 20-Sep-18 16:13:31

DD has used them for the last seven years because following her accident she no longer has enough strength in her right arm and hand to slice hard veg like onions, carrots and similar.

I use dried onions when I would otherwise need to chop a lot of onions, for batch Bolognaise sauce

the frozen onions are I think, already blanched because they are quite soft once they have defrosted and are great tipped in a pan to make a quick omelette with some cheese. My eyes are so hypersensitive that I have trouble chopping leeks now; I chop them so fast that I am sure I am going to take a fingertip off one day.

I too use frozen onions (and sliced fresh red onions , which I then freeze) all the time

One of the best things since sliced bread!

Alima Thu 20-Sep-18 16:36:56

Yes, I use them, so handy!

Nandalot Thu 20-Sep-18 16:37:43

I used some for the first time today! We always have onions in the house but when I needed some for a recipe, I found today was the exception! I had never thought of using them but it was a suggestion on the ‘Eat Well, Spend Less’ programme. (Think that is the name). Also bought frozen minced ginger because when I buy it for one recipe it has always gone soft before I need it again!

ninathenana Thu 20-Sep-18 16:52:18

Have never used them, have always thought it the lazy option.
Reading this thread I see the advantage.

kittylester Thu 20-Sep-18 16:56:47

I thought that nina. The bag I bought was £1.50 and seemed fairly full so they won't be terribly extravagant. I can't imagine using them instead of just one onion though.

Willow500 Thu 20-Sep-18 17:02:01

Just remembered we have some in the freezer from a BBQ we did last year - think they probably need binning by now sad

Jalima1108 Thu 20-Sep-18 17:20:37

Oh! No, I've never used them, although I confess that I bought two tubs of fresh chopped onions once when I was catering for a lot of people.

I have a small chopping machine (like a mini food processor) which I use to chop onions and garlic. Easy Peasy

Other brands available and other retailers available, hope this is not advertising, I just wanted to show you what I use.
I also make mint sauce in it - fresh mint, vinegar and sugar, whiz it all up.

I don't have any room in the freezer for chopped onions!

JudyJudy12 Thu 20-Sep-18 17:35:40

I use them, also frozen garlic and ginger.

annodomini Thu 20-Sep-18 17:41:56

My Kenwood mini chopper was a Delia Smith recommendation years ago and I got it on line for around £11. It has proved its worth many times over - it makes a lovely smoked salmon paté, more efficiently than my Magimix.

NanTheWiser Thu 20-Sep-18 18:09:40

I use frozen onions, mushrooms, and leeks too. Living on my own I don't need very large quantities, and these serve my purpose well. Ideal for when I make my veg soup throughout the winter.

SueDonim Thu 20-Sep-18 18:21:55

I have a bag of chopped onions in my freezer but have yet to use them. Maybe be I need to break them out, with all these recommendations!

My dd & I were saying that chopping raw onions lately has been v painful on the eyes and we wonderec if the hot summer has affected them in sone way, concentrating whatever it is that makes your eyes weep?

callgirl1 Thu 20-Sep-18 18:22:14

I haven`t tried onions, do occasionally use peppers and garden peas.

Jalima1108 Thu 20-Sep-18 18:27:53

The only frozen veg I buy are peas
I have sliced and frozen peppers myself though

what am I missing?

Juliette Thu 20-Sep-18 18:30:05

Frozen diced swede is a revelation. No more struggling to even peel the beast never mind chop it.
I think phoenix started a thread once about her struggles trying to cut one up. I think we had to pop it in the microwave first,
No more, just buy the frozen versionsmile

Blinko Thu 20-Sep-18 19:39:43

Iceland do frozen avocados! Now there's a thing.

kittylester Thu 20-Sep-18 19:47:26

I use frozen peas often.

What are the frozen mushrooms like?

NfkDumpling Thu 20-Sep-18 19:49:29

Frozen avocados? Don’t they go soggy when defrosted?

NonnaW Thu 20-Sep-18 19:54:11

Frozen peas are a staple but we’ve never tried frozen onions. We have gazed in the freezer cabinets lately though and marvelled at just what you can buy frozen these days.

cornergran Thu 20-Sep-18 20:01:01

Frozen onions prefent red eyes and a red nose for hours afterwards. Just can’t peel and chop them and continue to see.
