Big Ben Bong.

A scheme has been suggested to raise money by donations for Big Ben to ring out as we leave the EU.
For goodness sake ! If people want to mark the occasion surely there must be better ways for donations to be spent.

Think it will cost £500,000! So if it’s 10 bongs that’s £50,000 a bong. Pointless waste, and yes, it could be much better spent.
What would you all spend half a million on..?

eazybee Tue 14-Jan-20 12:55:01

Yes, we will be celebrating with a very good bottle of sparkling wine from our local English vineyard.

lemongrove Tue 14-Jan-20 14:12:48

I don’t need any clock bongs?to celebrate, had the bottle of Bolly for a while, but finally will be able to open and drink it on the evening of Jan 31st.???

NannyJan53 Tue 14-Jan-20 14:14:04

What a ridiculous idea!

lemongrove Tue 14-Jan-20 14:14:20

Eazy yes, we did think about the English version, but Bolly is Bolly ( and it was a present to us.)

How very sad, and what a waste of money. This country is divided enough over B as it is without this nonsense!

SirChenjin Tue 14-Jan-20 20:06:01

Everyone should be free to celebrate or ignore as they see fit but to ring BB won’t do anything to heal this already very divided country. Childish and unnecessary in the extreme.

Absolute waste considering the majority of the UK doesn't hear the clock. Of course is there going to be fireworks etc. and the whole performance televised.

Stiff Wed 15-Jan-20 09:51:13

Absolutely NO! Raise the money by all means but then give the money to a worthy cause like Cancer Research. Honestly, £500000 to hear a bloomin clock chime 10 times. Never heard of anything so ridiculous in my life.

Quizzer Wed 15-Jan-20 09:52:11

Why should we celebrate this disaster?

Urmstongran Wed 15-Jan-20 10:01:28

If it’s not taxpayers money I don’t see the problem. For those who are anti Brexit remember there are many who are pro. The election proved it! Vote for me (Boris) and ‘Get Brexit Done’. Within stonking majority in Parliament I think that’s the proof of the pudding.

And where do we stop? What about those taxpayers not keen on the royals. Are they vociferous about gun salutes/Trooping of the Colour etc? That’s taxpayers money.

Sometimes we have to agree to disagree!

Beanie654321 Wed 15-Jan-20 10:02:40

Absolute waste of money, when the country is on its knees. That money should not come out of money that should be spent on care of elderly and homeless, NHS, schools, etc. We have got to stop wasting money on frivolities. If ministers want it then let them pay for it out of their own overly inflated salaries.

Cliftonkate Wed 15-Jan-20 10:10:06

I just despair of this country ! This epitomises how far removed Boris Johnson is from real life. There are homeless people dying on our streets, cancer patients fighting to get the drugs they need because of NHS cutbacks and he wants to spend half a million to hear a clock strike (which 99% of the UK won’t hear anyway) words fail me I am incensed by this obscenity ??

NotSpaghetti Wed 15-Jan-20 10:10:47

Urmstongran does have a point, but it won’t help “bring the country together” will it?
Things like this are just an additional annoyance for some.

Obviously if people want to pay this, I suppose it’s up to them, but it seems divisive to me.

Bellanonna Wed 15-Jan-20 10:18:34

Ridiculous idea and an obscene waste of money, whatever its source.

GrandmaMoira Wed 15-Jan-20 10:22:31

People who are happy about Brexit can have their own celebrations. It's a terrible waste of public money to have a public celebration of something which has created such an angry and bitter division in the country.

M0nica Wed 15-Jan-20 10:27:18

Only if it tolls to mourn the death of the future in favour of a mythical past.

Graygirl Wed 15-Jan-20 10:28:46

The Last Leg just happens to be on that night , Adam realised that they come of air at 11pm UK time but it will be 12midnight Brussels time .

sarahellenwhitney Wed 15-Jan-20 10:31:30

Why not your local church bells? .Big Ben is ok if you are living within the area where it can be heard.

Oopsminty Wed 15-Jan-20 10:33:03

If people wish to donate to this, it's up to them

JessK Wed 15-Jan-20 10:36:22

Definite waste of money. If communities want to celebrate I'm sure church bells would be much cheaper!

RosesAreRed21 Wed 15-Jan-20 10:39:29

Totally agree with you

ania123 Wed 15-Jan-20 10:40:58

Rubbing salt into the wound that is Brexit.
I despair for this country.

AdeleJay Wed 15-Jan-20 10:43:02

Awful waste of money, even if it is donated by the public especially it entrenches divisions over Brexit.
And please don’t get me started on the second draft of the 50p piece or the Blue Passports...grrr
