Great.
As if we don't have enough to make our lives difficult.
The fireworks have started.
Around her the damned things will pretty much be a constant from now until mid-January.
Poor, poor dogs; cats; birds and small pets; wild animals; farm animals; farmers; people with babies and young children; people with dementia; people with PTSD etc etc etc. angrysadenvy

I’ve bought of those calming plug in things for our dog for the first time. I’ll report back as to how successful it is.

Georgesgran Fri 30-Oct-20 19:32:21

Unfortunately with Covid restrictions, I can see a lot of people buying them to set off in their gardens. DD2 has just mentioned a boxed set in A**A for £200+!
I’ve no objection to fireworks - in the right place and time. A house over the main road from us seems to have them for any excuse.

FannyCornforth Fri 30-Oct-20 19:35:54

Hi ww - I tried one of those. It didn't work and stank to high heaven (sorry - I do hope that you've bought a different brand!)
I must remember to buy a thunder shirt for DDog on the recommendation of someone on here.
At present, DDog has squeezed herself into the narrow space between my bed and the wall.
I must say, she is dealing with the dratted things much better than before.

We were just talking and wondering if there would be a lot more house parties for fireworks this year.

Then outside -BANG!💥🎇

Despite having had fireworks in the garden when I was a child, I now think they should only be available for organised displays (much more impressive) and not to the general public. Moreover, when I was a child we never bought bangers to avoid upsetting the neighbours and the pets. Now all fireworks seem to make a dreadful noise. OK, I'm a miserable spoilsport......

biba70 Fri 30-Oct-20 19:49:07

Hate them- and totally agree, no private sales or private displays should be allowed. As you say nowadays it goes on for months.

FannyCornforth Fri 30-Oct-20 19:53:46

I know what you mean about the noise.
As of recent years, the Autumn & Winter evenings sound like a flipping warzone around here.
I posted on another thread about fireworks (mind you, it may have been MN)...
Apparently, fireworks can easily be silent.
In parts of Italy it is illegal to use non-silent fireworks.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 30-Oct-20 19:55:45

Private garden fireworks should only be allowed on 05/11, Diwali and New Years Eve.

GrannyGravy13 Fri 30-Oct-20 19:56:51

We have got silent fireworks for GC next week.

EthelTheTank Fri 30-Oct-20 20:01:44

If only there were quiet fireworks. I do think they look quite pretty, especially the green ones and my grandchildren love them but they don't half scare my dog. People where I live think it's funny to set them off in the middle of the night to keep people awake, they've been doing it since around June. It's a good job my dog Craig is a deep sleeper so he isn't really bothered by them in the middle of the night. But on November 5th he gets rather panicky. I do feel bad for all the wild animals and the local birds. 🎆

EllanVannin Fri 30-Oct-20 20:05:56

They've been going off all this month and I can hear them tonight. There's usually a lone one, pretty loud, which goes off at around 11pm and the poor cats just freeze.
I feel for those with nervous dogs as they can be in a dreadful state.

Callistemon Fri 30-Oct-20 20:07:57

We heard some the other evening.
They will begin in earnest on Saturday and carry on until the New Year.

I don't mind an organised display but I don't think they should be sold to the general public.

Whitewavemark2 Fri 30-Oct-20 20:13:50

Well I’ve plugged it in but there is no smell that I can detect. Dog has snoozed happily through the evening, but not many fireworks😄

grannyrebel7 Fri 30-Oct-20 20:20:50

I think fireworks should be wiped off the face of the earth! Horrendous things! They serve no purpose whatsoever! I hate them. We used to have a dog a few years back that was absolutely terrified of them. I see Sainsbury's are no longer selling them which is great. Just wish all the other shops would follow suit. Rant over!

sodapop Fri 30-Oct-20 22:04:31

Well we may have lockdown and the dreaded forms but at least no Guy Fawkes 'celebrations' here thank goodness. Hope your dog does not get too stressed FannyCornforth

When I was a boy we bought penny bangers and threw them around, health & safety would have had a field day. But Bonfire night was frowned upon at the catholic school that I attended.
the GunPowder Plot of 1605 was a plan to blow up parliament, overturn the Reformation and restore the country to Catholicism. Any parallels with Brexit?

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 02:07:39

Brexit Fireworks shock
Spangler - you devil. You've just created the most hellish scenario!

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 02:11:07

Excellent stuff GrannyGravy.
Are silent fireworks widely available now?
I do hope so. They must be quite magical.
I can't understand the appeal of a beautiful light show that sounds like a flipping bomb going off.

Jane10 Sat 31-Oct-20 08:50:51

We once had a cat who positively loved fireworks. While our other poor pusses cowered under the sofa she'd rush to the window and stare out at the fireworks bursting in the sky. She had nerves of steel at the best of times and saw off a doberman and an alsation who'd dared to enter our garden. What a cat. Went out one day and never returned. sad

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 09:14:51

Aah Janeflowers
There's nowt so queer as cats.

Daisymae Sat 31-Oct-20 09:33:46

Hate fireworks. Should be banned for private use.

Oldwoman70 Sat 31-Oct-20 09:43:16

Most of us had fireworks when we were young - but they were mostly restricted to 5th November and New Years Eve. These days they are louder and used for any "celebration". I agree they should no longer be available to the general public but kept for organised displays only.

kwest Sat 31-Oct-20 10:28:18

With you all the way. they used to terrify one of my dogs in particular. Sadly all 3 dogs died of old age and we won't be having any more.

FannyCornforth Sat 31-Oct-20 10:34:41

Well, believe it or not, one has just gone off.
The most enormous, horrendous BANG
DDog is now a quivering wreck
