Regarding eating what you fancy, the cruise I went on had food available on request so if you wanted porridge or a sandwich or a croissants or whatever it could be supplied.
You didn't have to eat lobster or whatever else was on the menu. In fact someone I travelled with had ham salad every day it seemed to me!
My (one and only) cruise was one where you dressed for dinner but you didn't have to if you wanted easy informal meals on deck or were happy to dine in the bistro on board.
I just felt that I wanted to know more about the places we visited so just a day or two at any one place didn't work for me.
